php.ini is a server-wide file that contains PHP settings. I can't change the session.save_path to point to a single user's directory. Joomla's got to have another way of setting itself up, as I've got it working on HelioHost's main page.
You don't need any SMTP details at all. The path to sendmail should handle it for you.
SMTP is used for sending email from an external server; locally, sendmail is used. The PHP mail() function does not require any SMTP login information.

Can you give me the URL to these scripts, along with your HelioHost username? I know that the server tends to serve 500s when it's overloaded, but it shouldn't be that common.
