  1. Hi anush, Thanks for the welcome and the answer to my question. Good to note that the higher-ups will have a look. You guys are really providing a great service here with a knowledgeable and friendly support system!
  2. Thanks for your reply. I was able to login with an alternate address thanks to admin user Krydos. If at all possible, there should be some way of giving thumbs-up or "reputation" via the PM system. Very helpful support staff, which is unusual for a free service. Much obliged!
  3. I am unable to login to my cPanel at djzebbie.heliohost.org/cpanel. I haven't uploaded anything to my site yet, djzebbie.heliohost.org (which just became active as of yesterday), but that loads OK; it's cPanel that I'm not able to access. I checked with isup.me (isup.me/stevie.heliohost.org), and was told Stevie is up. But cPanel at stevie.heliohost.org:2082 doesn't seem to be working. I have tried with different browsers -- Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome (I don't use IE due to security concerns). Firefox reports "cannot find server" and Opera gives roughly the same error message, "connection dropped by remote server." Safari and Chrome are no different. Is there something wrong with the server that won't let me login to cPanel? Because my site (what minimum there is as of yet) loads OK. 4. Hi anush, Lol, and thank you for welcoming me here. What I was referring to was that on the front page of the forum, at http://www.helionet.org/index/, there are 224 (now 225, counting this one) topics (or threads) listed in this particular forum: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6034/heliohostboardannotated.png (I left it as a link because the screenshot is big.) But in this (sub)forum, Arts & Entertainment itself (http://www.helionet.org/index/forum/29-art-and-entertainment/), there are (were) only two topics (or threads), three counting this one: http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/732/heliohostaeannotated.png I was not referring to just two users being online. The two other topics (or threads) are about someone's poetry and a question about TV shows at the BBC. I wouldn't think 224 topics/threads (or 225, in this case) would fit on a single page, as is highlighted in the second screenshot. Just wondering what may have happened to the 222 other topics (or threads). Not especially important, just wondering out of curiosity, as it seems to be a mystery. Maybe those topics/threads were from users who no longer exist here and were deleted? Still liking my experience here so far, though -- just now signed up for a hosting account. Thanks again for welcoming me... even though I am still a newbie.
  5. Makes me think of that song "Particle Man" by They Might Be Giants. Lyrics
  6. How come on the front page of the forum the A&E section is said to have 224 topics -- but I only see two? Just out of curiosity.
  7. Personally, I do believe in evolution; I don't think it's possible nowadays not to since the discovery of the genome code and the explosion of research into forensics, DNA and neuroscience. I also find absolutist religion difficult to reconcile as fact rather than metaphor, since the parables and myths of different cultures share so many parallels: Eve damning humanity by eating the "forbidden fruit" / Persephone condemning the earth to barren winter by consuming pomegranate seeds in Hades The fruit of divine knowledge (which was not even originally mentioned as being an apple) / ambrosia, the sweet nectar of the Olympian gods Easter, the Christian commemoration of Christ rising from the tomb to bring light to the world / Oestre, the pagan goddess of fertility who "rose" from the earth to bring light to the world (it is from "Oestre" that we get the word Easter and also estrogen, the hormone of female fertility) Samson, the Old Testament strongman / Hercules, the Greek mythical strongman Etc. Good sources for reading on this are the works of Joseph Campbell and Christopher Vogler, who in turn took their philosophy from Carl Jung, the father of archetypal psychology (and himself a former student of Freud). Vogler took much of what Campbell wrote and consolidated it into a manual on screenwriting that George Lucas used to construct the mythical gospel of... Skywalker (the prodigal scion) vs. Vader (the despotic father figure). Another branch of this ideology is that of the controversial psychologist Bruno Bettleheim who wrote about using children's fairy tales as a non-threatening therapeutic approach accessible and understandable by the younger set. But scientific theories aside, one could reasonably speculate that in 20 years (probably less), searching Google Earth to find "intelligent life" ...might ring up a 404.
  8. lol. I'm coming with you! The girls ain't the prettiest here either. xD Lol, I'm at least somewhat Canadian... Justin Bieber isn't exactly the prettiest of Canadian girls, though.
  9. Hey, I know this thread is over two months old by now, and I hope I'm not violating any terms by re-"bumping" a dying thread or recommending other services, but I thought I'd add one more to the list: uk.to. It's operated by a guy named Chris who also owns .us.to (which doesn't seem to be loading right now). He brands it as "the logical alternative to .co.uk." Both are under the umbrella of the popular FreeDNS.afraid.org, where you can also sign up for nl.am, aa.am, t28.net and even org.org. There are several other listings at FreeDNS Afraid's registry page. You can also sign up for .za.org (which is not part of FreeDNS Afraid's network), until October 31, 2012, after which it will no longer be accepting registrations. Sites will still continue to operate, however. EDIT (thread now over 4mos old, but anyway): There is a growing initiative known as OpenNIC, which is described as an "alternative root system," and has opened up free registrations for the domains .geek, .free, .bbs, .parody, .oss, .indy, .fur, .ing, .micro, .dyn, .neo, .pirate, gopher and null. You have to setup your own computer's DNS to access any of these; it's similar to the Tor Project's use of .onion for sites only accessible when "tunneling" your connection through Tor. Unlike the "darknet" service i2p, you can access any of the "standard" TLDs (top-level domains) through OpenNIC, like .com, .net and .co.uk. OpenNIC also allows you to access .onion sites without tunneling through Tor, although I wonder if using both wouldn't add at least a little more layer of security to your browsing. Another site using the OpenNIC alternative root system is BlockAid Public DNS. The .pirate domain was started by the representative of the United States "Pirate Party" in response to the criminal crackdown on sites offering free sharing of copyrighted content, such as The Pirate Bay, Demonoid and MegaUpload. I am sure recent events such as the arrest of MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom, and the Swedish government's arrangement to have TPB founder "Anakata" arrested and extradited from Cambodia to face sentencing in his home country of Sweden, will increase people's demand for a citizen-oriented "free" networking system.
  10. (Never mind, found answer. Please feel free to lock/delete.) Topic resolved
  11. North America > United States. Born in U.K., lived in Canada briefly as a child, now living in U.S. Considering my multinational heritage, I probably should be rooting for the Antarctica team in this year's Olympics. But it appears there isn't one -- maybe since these are the Summer Games and penguins don't like warm weather. Except for Chilly Willy and Tux when he visits the land of Ubuntu.
  12. Elizabeth Sebastian, aka djzebbie, from the United States. Likes music (esp. '70s-'80s), movies (esp. romantic comedies and other lighthearted fare), reading (books of all sorts, incl. nonfiction titles, and various blogs, periodicals and other publications), and quiet time to oneself. Used to blog at WordPress.com, but was searching for something more full-featued and flexible, and that still fit within my budget. I've decided to go with HelioHost as I gear up to launch a personal-development/inspirational blog and website this fall. What attracted me to HH was the general motif of the site and the general attitude of the admins and community -- after all, what could be more positive than the bright shining sun?
