  1. I agree, this was a funny movie and appropriate for the entire family. The set of instructions made for a good laugh. I thought they could have gone a little further with that before he lost them to the monkey. I liked his second day on the job when he came prepared to deal with all the usual happenings in the museum. The monkey still seemed to outsmart him at every turn. The war between the Romans and the Cowboys was hilarious. The cavemen were also a riot. Although at one point you thought all hell was breaking lose, the writers wrapped everything up nicely at the end.
  2. The weather turned out to be great during our camping trip this weekend. We were able to pack up the tents clean and dry. This is always a plus since it saves a lot of time after you get back. I'm all ready to go again in less than two weeks. This year we have had exceptionally good weather in my neck of the woods. Normally we have a lot of rain and it is cooler. The trees are starting to get their leaves and the flowers are starting to pop up. Looks like Spring is in full swing so to speak. There were quite a few people fishing out at the lake. The park was having a fishing derby for all the young anglers out there. The ODNR, Division of Wildlife released trout into the lake and if you caught a tagged fish you would win a prize. I think they also had something for largest fish. On the home front, I pulled out the powerwasher and cleaned my deck yesterday. Today I'm planning on adding a coat of Waterseal. If this sounds exciting be sure to come over and help. In the past I haven't taken care of my deck until May or even June. I feel pretty good about being ahead of schedule. Although the waterseal task is an every other year activity. I also had to take my truck into the shop. My transmission has been acting up and this could be a costly visit. I'm certainly not looking forward to hearing from the repair guys.
  3. Yes, an obvious fraud, but he did create quite a stir. Enough to get his name or psuedoname into wikipedia. He should have left with his computer and returned to his own time by now. Is it possible that his mere presence in the past has disrupted the space time continuum making his prophecies not come true? If you were traveling in time you would probably want to keep a pretty low profile. Anyone with a few episodes of Star Trek under their belt would know that.
  4. There are a lot of projects at sourceforge and they have a pretty good setup that allows for people to share code and collaborate with each other. Maybe you'll find something that interests you. More projects exist elsewhere. Pretty much any Linux distribution will have a community of people supporting it in one way or another. Go to the distribution of your choice and browse around. You could also look into specific packages like the Gnome or KDE desktop environments. Gnu.org is another place loaded with software projects.
  5. Never heard of John Titor until now. There is a lot written about him on the internet. The part about the laptop isn't quite right. Supposedly he needed to retrieve an IBM 5100 microcomputer, which was IBM's first microcomputer built back in 1975. It was portable, but not really a laptop. More like a small desktop. This begs the question of why he didn't travel back further in time to when these computers where first made. I'm sure he'd have an explaination for it. Maybe he just wanted to get a good deal on eBay. Where did you hear about him?
  6. I was tired of seeing the message, "What can I do to get 50,000 helions?" at the top and decided to do something about it. I'm sure someone is going to reply to it now that I said something. Well, at least I'll get a brief moment of respite. The topic is just as it suggests, What's new and exciting? All you have to do is tell us what's new and exciting in your life. Anyone saying nothing or replying with one line will be shamelessly ignored or dipped in cheese sauce. So there you have it. As for me, I'm heading out tent camping this weekend. It's just a one nighter at a State Park. The weather is looking good and this time of year you avoid the crowds. The plan is to go hiking, eat some outdoor cooking, and kick back around the campfire. I enjoy getting into the outdoors and getting away from the day to day routine whenever possible.
  7. It's very difficult to pick just one all time favorite movie. Among the classics there are two movies on my all time list. I'm willing to bet quite a few on Helionet have never seen these films. African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Humphrey Bogart is one of my favorite actors. Whenever I see him, I think what a class act. Katherine Hepburn is also tough to beat when it comes to actresses. She puts herself into a role and makes it completely believable. The movie has a unique storyline and the two main characters have a rare chemistry between them. Unlike most of the movies made today this film is shot on location and there is no faking the harsh filming conditions. The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen, Candice Bergen, a very young Mako, along with several other top rated actors do a splendid job. Steve McQueen is another one of my favorites. I also love watching old time Navy movies. This one is set on a river gun boat in a revolution torn china sometime in the 1920's. McQueen plays a hard working ship's engineer that is put into one tough situation after another. He is constantly trying to do the right thing, but meets resistance from multiple directions. There are crew problems, issues with the captain, a country at revolution, and romantic situations to deal with. To me, this is a movie worth watching.
  8. When I saw this movie it immediately reminded me of a 1971 movie called The Omega Man, starring Charleton Heston. The main character played by Will Smith and Charleton Heston is the same in each, Dr. Robert Neville. There are enough differences in the plot and script of each movie that make them unique enough that you don't know how things are going to play out. Today I did a quick search and found a Wikipedia entry on I Am Legend. It turns out that the novel these movies were based on was written in 1954 by Richard Matheson. It has been used for three movies. The other movie is The Last Man on Earth starring Vicent Price released in 1964. I can remember the name, but don't remember ever watching it. I liked the movie. The plot really gets you thinking about what you would do to survive in a post apocalyptic world with flesh eating zombies trying to get you. Now that I know about the novel I may even go to the library and check it out. There are suppose to be a number of differences.
  9. We are not really talking about bioluminescence. Organic compounds are not alive, they just have molecules that contain Carbon. It is the combination of compounds that work together to emit light when an electrical charge is added.
  10. Have you taken a look at sourceforge.net. There are many projects there that you can get involved with. Once you register you can look at the Projects-Help Wanted forum to locate a project that matches your skill set. It is a little tricky to find. Post back if you need more info and I'll give you the menu path or a link.
  11. Thus far I've only seen a portion of one show which makes it tough to compare it to Doctor Who. Russell T. Davies is the creative force behind the show so there will most likely be a few similarities. Torchwood hasn't come to the SciFi channel yet. Unless you have access to BBC America or live in the UK it will be difficult to view. Although on the BBC America website it looks like you can get series one of Torchwood on DVD.
  12. You seemed to have a few examples showing that more is happening than just our body dying when the time comes. I remember reading about a photograph taken in the late 1800's or early 1900's that the photographer captured something that wasn't visible to the human eye upon the moment of death. The image or aura could not be explained. They theorized that it was the soul leaving the body. However, I still get back to not worrying about death. As a few have already said, live life to the fullest and make the best of your time here. If you continually think about the end, you miss the journey. Have fun, enjoy life, keep smiling...
  13. In the U.S. we are just getting our first taste of The Sarah Jane Adventures on the scifi channel? I was away this weekend and set up my VCR to record. Only problem is that the wrong tape speed was selected and it ran out of tape with about a half hour to go. As a result I can only comment on a portion of the show. Anyone know if they are going to replay this episode? It wasn't part of the online videos at scifi.com. Perhaps it will be in the future. Elisabeth Sladen is as lovely as I remember and I must say that I can only hope to look as fit and attractive when I reach that point in my life. Sarah appears a bit snobby or elusive at first. Later you can see that she really cares about people, but doesn't want them to get too close to her or the dangers of what she does. Another character I liked was Maria, a young girl that has just moved in across the street from Sarah Jane Smilth. I felt that the two of them make a good team. Overall I would say they have the potential to launch an interesting series of adventures. When you think about it Earth is as good a place as any for aliens to visit. They certainly would blend in well enough with our celebrities.
  14. There was another thread in Philosophy that focused on the afterlife. Some believe that when our physical bodies die we transfer to another plane of existence. Others believe the opposite and think life ceases to exist when our body dies. Some theories suggest that the Egyptian Pharoahs attempted to defeat death by building large monuments and stuffing them full of earthly possessions so they wouldn't have to go into the next life and start over. Somehow I doubt that this worked. The phrase, "You can't take it with you" comes to mind. In a sense, even the wealthy people of today do this by constructing new buildings at colleges and having them named after themselves. In a way immortalizing themselves. Don't get me wrong, not all wealthy people are this self absorbed and many do it for the right reasons. So why did I bring that up? The fact is you should not be so concerned about death as with truly living your life. There are some people that are already dead and don't even know it. They contribute nothing to themselves or society. If you want to cheat death you need to touch the lives of as many people as you can and make an impact. Being remember is one way of living on long after your body is gone. Another step to take is to live a longer life by doing the right things. Eating the right food, improving your mind, exercising, even looking both ways before crossing the street (not taking unnecessary risks). All of these have an impact on the length of your life. So often I have heard that we should live life to the fullest. Don't squander what has been given to you. Focus on the journey not the destination.
  15. So as_above, what are you saying, you don't have any friends now? Just kidding... Welcome to HelioNet.
  16. I don't claim to know everything about this, but have read a little on the subject. In this case, the LED is made up of organic compounds. Don't think of this as organic gardening or farming that's a whole different use of the word organic. Think more about organic chemistry. Organic chemistry deals with organic compounds. All organic compounds have molecules that contain carbon.
  17. I went to see Run, Fat Boy, Run today and had a good laugh. Simon Pegg is great as, Dennis, the lead character. The movie has laughable scenes and others that get you thinking about life. There are the bumbling moments and the tender moments Dennis shares with his son, Jake and Libby, his ex-girlfriend, ex-fiance, ex-bride. Some of the reviewers did not give this movie much credit, however, many of the online reviews I read by regular people really enjoyed it. I give it a thumbs up and would recommend seeing it. There is a quote at the end that I won't get exactly correct, but I thought really summed up what I feel is the message behind the movie. Libby asks, "Are you still running?", Dennis replies, "Everyday, and in the right direction."
  18. I would recommend taking as many science courses as you can in high school. It will be worth it just to see if you have a] an interest in the subject or b] an aptitude for learning it. At one time I wanted to be a Chemical Engineer. I had an excellent Chemistry teacher in high school and he really motivated me to go that direction. In the end I decided to change my major, but I still remember that learning chemistry in high school was pretty neat. I liked the experiments the best.
  19. No one ever answered this post so I thought I would take a stab at it. I don't think it is correct to pressure someone into thinking one way or the other. People should be free to make up their own minds. If you run into someone like that you should walk the other way. If you consider that person a friend, let them know that this subject bothers you and you rather talk about something else. At the same time, you might ask yourself, do they really mean harm by it, or do they just want to share their point of view. One of the things I like to do is always keep an open mind. What the heck, I might learn something new. At the same time, you have an obligation to yourself to hold onto your beliefs.
  20. That's a pretty deep, but not totally unplausible argument awesomejoe. Some theorize that the Universe will eventually run out of energy and begin to collapse on itself. I don't know, maybe I heard that on Star Trek or something. 8) To answer the original question I believe Forrest Gump said it best, "It Happens." Scientifically there is no who about it, it just happened. Taking a more outside the box stance it could be some supernatural entity that decided to run an experiment one day and left it going.
  21. There are two things you can count on in life, Death and Taxes. While I don't agree with everything governments spend our taxes on there are plenty of things I do approve of. Roads for example, if we didn't have taxes the roads would be in such disrepair you'd never get from point A to B without killing yourself or disabling your vehicle. Another thing is the military. I know some of you disagree with how the military is used from time to time, but the fact is without them freedom would be short lived. Never blame the military for doing their job. Civilian leadership calls the shots on when and where they are used. Ask yourself how different things would be without the military's help during a natural disaster. There are a lot of complaints about the age to receive retirement benefits from Social Security going up but as someone already stated so has our life expectancy and standard of living. Truth is if you want to retire early you can, just learn how to spend your money wisely and save for the future. I for one plan on retiring earlier than 65. After all, what's the point of retiring if you're too feable to enjoy it. While I don't agree on spending $500 for toilet seat or a couple million to research the migratory pattern of a swallow there are some projects/programs that are of great benefit. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. It is also worthwhile to note that we do have some say in the matter. Let your vote count and let your opinion be heard by those in office. That's my two cents.
  22. Hmm, never been called a noodle hater before, but I guess there is always a first. The first answer I came up with was that the Spaghetti got on my bad side and deserved to get beat up badly. The Spaghetti must have stepped in my sauce? I hate noodles that do that even straight non-instant ones.
  23. I was surfing and ran across Microsoft Popfly. Looks like both CNET and PCWorld have given it a thumbs up. Has anyone tried Popfly out yet? Just signed up myself, but haven't had time to play with it. I'll post again to let you know how it goes after I build something.
  24. CSS and javascript will be a real plus to have in your toolbox. CSS makes it very easy to redesign the entire look of your web site with very little effort. javascript is widely used and will get the client side involved. You'll have to decide on your own if you want to go with php or asp/asp.NET. As some have already stated, php is OpenSource and freely available. This is a plus and you'll find help on the net and in forums. You can download Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition for nothing from the microsoft site. I feel the tutorials and help included are excellent. In my opinion VB is one of the easiest languages to learn. My first programming language was Basic. I'm not into Flash, but JcX may talk me into it someday.
  25. The majority of us are here because we have an interest in web site design and development. I would agree that XPlumped... should do a little leg work before asking, but it could be that they have no idea of how to even get started. Most of us are here because we have an interest in web design and/or development. Discussing something like html forms may reveal a new technique or some functionality not everyone knew. The one thing I would caution though is when someone asks what looks like a homework question. I don't think this is the case here, but you will never learn how to code if someone does it for you. Experience is the best teacher. Okay, off my soapbox and back to the original question. This is just a stab at the logic behind the scenes. If I wanted to direct someone to a page based on what was selected I would use either threshold values or a simple count with the winner taking the prize. By assigning numeric values to each multiple choice letter you could set up a compound if to decide which page should follow. For example, if you assign A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4 you could loop through the answers and tally up the selections to get a value. That value would then be compared to threshold values in a compound if statement to send them onto the desired page. In a 10 question survey, a score of 10-19 might send you to the "A" page. In the counting method the majority wins, but you do have to figure out what to do in ties. The threshold method doesn't have that drawback. This was just a quick stab at an answer and there are plenty of other ways to do it. I'd probably go javascript, but others might be more comfortable with php or VB in an asp or asp.NET application.
