space2018 Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 (edited) It has been brought to my attention that HelioHost offers VPSs in exchange for minimum donations and this might be useful for development and/or web hosting. But I have a few questions about it. 1. Do we donate the amount via Paypal and paste the transaction ID on here? When I go to https://www.heliohost.org/vps/ - all I see is a subscribe button.2. If hosting Mediawiki (or some kind of web application), is 2 GB of RAM and 50 GB disk space sufficient for this?3. Does the VPS have to be used for web hosting purpose under Terms of Use?4. Is donating recurring monthly through Paypal a suitable means to get a VPS?5. Are the VPSs on SSD-based storage? Your time is greatly appreciated Edited November 9, 2019 by space2018 1
Sn1F3rt Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 1. You'll have to make a request and an admin will get in touch with you. The payment process is a monthly recurring donation. 2. Should be fine. 3. Yes. Mainly bcuz abuse policy and other ToS hold good for VPSes too mainly bcuz it's HelioHost servers where the VMs exist. The load factor is also there just FYI, your VPS shouldn't degrade the performance of others and that's all. 4. That's the only way as far as I know. (Maybe a single donation for an entire year could also be good) 5. No. Mechanical disk via network attached storage. (Thanks to wolstech).
wolstech Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 1. No, you set it up via that website, they're not processed like the shared hosting accounts. Krydos will email you about it once he gets the request.2. Yes if you run Linux on it. If you want Windows, get at least 4gb of Ram and 100gb of space. Windows VPSes do not include a license either, so you'll need to buy one elsewhere (about $700 for plain Windows Server Standard).3. You can host other stuff like game servers, remote desktops, etc. if you wish. There's no requirement that it be used only for websites. Whatever you host must follow the Terms of Service like a hosting account though, so you cannot host illegal things like torrent seedboxes for pirated movies or botnets.4. Yes.5. No. Mechanical disk via network attached storage.
wolstech Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 @sohamb03: Disks are mechanical, so your number 5 is wrong. Also, the VPS can be used for non-hosting purposes if they wish.
Sn1F3rt Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 I've corrected my point 5. And about the other thing - maybe I misunderstood his question. I thought he meant whether he's to comply with ToS for web hosting.
Krydos Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 1. Do we donate the amount via Paypal and paste the transaction ID on here? When I go to https://www.heliohost.org/vps/ - all I see is a subscribe button. After you hit subscribe it takes you to paypal's website to finish the transaction. The way it works on my end is I get two emails. One that contains the stats of the requested VPS, and then I get an email from paypal saying that the new recurring VPS payment has been created. If I get both emails then I create the VPS and email the credentials to the address that was submitted. A lot of people "test" out the VPS page though so I get a lot of requests for VPS which haven't been paid for. I generally just ignore those.
