[HH#762824] temp Ricky account, DNS, volunteerism

Recommended Posts

Username: zacharyw, Server: Tommy, Main domain: zmwilliams.com

Hi. This is not urgent. Donors with a transaction ID affected by Tommy's

downtime can get a temporary account on Ricky if I read things correctly. My

last donation's transaction ID from PayPal is

78V56936VG6131122

email, same as this one: zachary.matthew@gmail.com

I actually don't mind not getting domain email (zmwilliams.com). I fumbled

through and managed to successfully get my DNS settings correct in cPanel

when I donated to get an account on Tommy (moving from InMotion). What's the

status of DNS records that were created as such?

Again, having the temporary account is not urgent right now but would be

helpful.

Thanks for everything!

P.S. I am interested in the potential of volunteering for Heliohost. I have

some background in web servers, scripting, and customer service. I'm

wondering if you could put me in touch with someone who coordinates

volunteerism for your non-profit.

Hi,

An administrator can send you an invite to Ricky once your donation has been verified. You can then create an account on Ricky and upload the files that you need from your Backup. The DNS records from your domain will need to be removed before it can be added to your new account. Additionally, if you try to sign up for your new account and try to add your old domain before the DNS records have been removed the creation of your account will fall. You are, however, able to signup for a new account and add a different domain (such as a HelioHost subdomain) and then add your old domain in later. If you would like to reuse your current email address on your new account I would suggest downloading your backup now as it will be harder to get it once your address is reused (it will need to be changed to one that doesn’t work in the account records and you will need an admin to manually email you your account backup). The same is true for your old username, if you would like to reuse it all record of your old account will need to be removed before you sign up (an admin can do this but your backup won’t be available).

Regarding volunteering, HelioHost is different from most organisations in that it is run and supported by the community of people that use it. The best way to start volunteering is to login to your forum account and start making posts that answer people’s questions. The forum is monitored closely and and people who are active and helpful are offered promotions to Moderator and then Root Administrator. All the current root admins started out as regular users.

I hope that helps. Let us know if you have other questions.

Invite sent.

Your old DNS zones still exist for the time being. If you want these cleaned up so the domain can be reused, I can do so, but be aware that your custom records and changes you made will be deleted. Please let me know if you want this cleaned up. If you do not, please be sure to pick a domain that is NOT zmwilliams.com.

Also, please be aware that as part of configuring the new server, one of the steps will be to purge all of the DNS zones and account records that were on the failed Tommy server. Your domain will be cleaned up automatically at that time if you do not request it earlier.

Whoops, I should have read the last email more carefully! Sorry. As long as

a notification goes out in similar fashion to the other updates that we've

gotten at various stages, that would be enough notice. I don't think I

actually have my DNS backed up anywhere (live and learn). Is it accessible

to you such that you could send me the records I created/changed through

cPanel?

My I didn't use domain email I wouldn't even bug you about this. I

understand you're an unpaid volunteer; I do my best not to ask

already-answered questions but I slip sometimes.

Thanks again.

Dear support,

Reading here,

https://www.helionet.org/index/topic/36440-tommy-downtime/page-7

I see that someone else experiences what I do: their domain or subdomain

points to an empty directory with a cgi-bin directory. The same is true when

my domain resolves.

What file location am I seeing when I go to zmwilliams.com?

When Tommy is ready to rock again, will users have to re-create their user

accounts?

My primary concern is making sure my DNS records don't change over the

course of all of this so that I continue to receive domain email. What will

be the next step for users? Is there anything I should keep in mind to keep

my DNS customizations as they were and still seem to be?

I hope my questions make sense. Thanks a lot for your time.

Zach

P.S. I didn't end up touching the email that contained a Ricky invitation. I

gave it some thought and didn't want to end up with another account that I'd

have to terminate when Tommy is back. So if that invite has an expiration,

I'll just leave it alone and let it go away. Sorry for the trouble.
