Blu_Haze Posted July 10, 2011 Share Posted July 10, 2011 I recently created my first account over on Johnny, and installed a forum for my guild. After everything was set up I noticed that Johnny goes through very frequent intervals of either running normally, running extremely slowly (20+ seconds to load a single page), or even being inaccessible altogether. After doing some research, it is my understanding that Johnny is typically much less stable because of the extra features that it provides such as ASP.net, Ruby on Rails, etc. I do not currently use these features, however I wanted my website to be on Johnny because I have had a prolonged interest in learning and using those new technologies at some point. My question is if this repeated slowness and downtime on Johnny is something that will continue for the foreseeable future, or if this is just something temporary that will clear up in a week or two. I'm running a fairly simple website that doesn't have a great deal of traffic, so rock solid stability isn't important to me. With that said though, it does still have to be usable at least most of the time, currently though I almost always expect it to be either extremely slow or even down altogether. Please don't take this as a complaint, I love that you guys offer free hosting with such a large and attractive amount of features at no extra charge. I'm just trying to plan for the future, and wanting to decide if I should stick it out on Johnny for the extra tools at some point, or wave the white flag and make the move over to Stevie now. I'm sure you get threads like this fairly often, so I won't knock you for the somewhat canned response. To be clear, rock solid stability isn't what I'm after, all I'm looking for is usability. For the small amount of traffic that I'm anticipating, I don't mind if it's a little slow during peak times, or even inaccessible once in a while. This is the first time that I've ever used HelioHost though, so I have nothing to compare this experience to. I don't want to jump ship and abandon the possibility of using the extra features in the future if this is only a temporary setback for Johnny. The main reason why I posted this, is because I don't want to be so quick to lay all of the blame on Johnny. Recently I've noticed that even all of helionet.org has been a bit on the slow side, taking half a minute or more to load a thread, which means that it could even be something wrong on my end such as an ISP router being down somewhere. Right now my website over on Johnny is either very slow or even sporadically down for most of the day, and I'm satisfied to wait patiently if this is just something temporary. On the other hand, if this is something that happens all the time, then I'm also content to start moving over to Stevie, even if it means giving up the extra features. Johnny is currently struggling with 1200 accounts which are mostly using dangerous hard services with increased server load due to these services. I'll start moving my website over to Stevie then to make room for others who are already actively making use of those services. I didn't see this mentioned in the wiki, but once I delete my account is there any way to check to see if it's fully cleared and ready to make the new account? Other than of course just waiting the typical 48 hours lol. Also it seems like both cPanels have been down pretty much all day, both Stevie and Johnny. (http://stevie.heliohost.org:2082/, and http://johnny.heliohost.org:2082 are what I'm using). Are you guys seeing these as down on your end as well? If you ever can't log in directly from that, try logging in from either the bottom of the HelioHost website or by clicking "cPanel Login" under "Account" in the toolbar at the bottom of this page (hover your mouse at the bottom of the page) - those two have the same form. If you ever can't log in directly from that, try logging in from either the bottom of the HelioHost website or by clicking "cPanel Login" under "Account" in the toolbar at the bottom of this page (hover your mouse at the bottom of the page) - those two have the same form. I tried the toolbar at the bottom, but was unsuccessful with that as well. Using that link displayed the same "Unable to Connect" web page as well. Also I noticed that the FTP no longer seems to be working for me either. When I try to connect it says: Status: Connecting to 64.62.211.131:21... Status: Connection attempt failed with "EACCES - Permission denied". Error: Could not connect to server All of these, the cPanel, and the FTP were working fine for me before. If you try to create a new account with the same username as you are currently using and it hasn't deleted yet it will give an error saying that account name is already in use. You can also ask an admin if your account is fully deleted. As of the timestamp of this post your account is still active, and hasn't yet been queued for deletion. If you do decide to switch servers don't forget to back up everything on your current account first. There is no recovery once the account is deleted. Correct, as you said I haven't started moving over to Stevie yet because I want to back up all of my files and the MySQL databases, however I haven't been able to access either the FTP or the cPanel at all today. A few moments ago though I just realized that some software on my computer was blocking connections from both the cPanel and the FTP, my apologies for the confusion on that issue.
