Instead of smtp.gmail.com, try using ssl://smtp.gmail.com.

Not really. SMF has converters for many different types of forum software. Although it kinda would be a waste of money to buy Invasion Power Board and then have to switch back.

You can use different themes and everything should then be fine If you would like to try other forums out, try going to http://www.opensourcecms.com and find a good software that fits your needs.

DjBob (Site Administrator) validates and activates each account by hand, so it will take a while before your account is fully active.

You can use phpBB or myBB as a free alternative. If you really like IPB, then I guess you have to save up and buy the legal version.
