The reason is simple : Server Name Indication (SNI). This will allow many people to use SSL on shared ip addresses , but only on modern addresses. Still , this is a good feature to talk about. I forget what happened, but I remember a discussion about SNI not being properly supported by a large chunk of browsers used to access our service. hussam Posted November 13, 2014 Share Posted November 13, 2014 Cloudflare's blog had a discussion about that last month.You only need IE7 or higher, Firefox 2 or higher, Opera 8 or higher, Safari 3 or higher.So really anything from the last 7 years or so works. If you're using IE on Windows XP it won't work, but you've got bigger issues (e.g. sitting duck for malware). There's no good reason to be using IE on XP.
