Brother Hassan
But I wonder how .Tk survives then ? They are also free, no ?That is because .tk is a country code, not a generic TLD. They do not have to pay these prices because they are a country, not a company. .tk was given to a country called Tokelau, but they only have about 1000 inhabitants and they won't really need that much websites. So they gave the management to a Dutch company called Dot TK BV to manage it. And they give some of the money they earn with premium domains and parking pages back to Tokelau to "make the people more self-sufficient" as Dot TK's website says. TL;DR: It's a country, they don't need to pay that sum, they get it for free.Ohhhh ...Thank you for the information

i7Grendel
You must understand that Tokelau only has a thousand inhabitants, and therefore outsources it to Dot TK. They have offices in other places including London and Amsterdam. And I believe it is a Dutch company. Officially, they are called Dot TK BV. BV is an abbreviation for Besloten Vennootschap, which is a type of business. This suffix is similar in use as GmbH for Germany and Inc. for the US. djzebbie
Hey, I know this thread is over two months old by now, and I hope I'm not violating any terms by re-"bumping" a dying thread or recommending other services, but I thought I'd add one more to the list: uk.to. It's operated by a guy named Chris who also owns .us.to (which doesn't seem to be loading right now). He brands it as "the logical alternative to .co.uk." Both are under the umbrella of the popular FreeDNS.afraid.org, where you can also sign up for nl.am, aa.am, t28.net and even org.org. There are several other listings at FreeDNS Afraid's registry page. Â You can also sign up for .za.org (which is not part of FreeDNS Afraid's network), until October 31, 2012, after which it will no longer be accepting registrations. Sites will still continue to operate, however. Â EDIT (thread now over 4mos old, but anyway): There is a growing initiative known as OpenNIC, which is described as an "alternative root system," and has opened up free registrations for the domains .geek, .free, .bbs, .parody, .oss, .indy, .fur, .ing, .micro, .dyn, .neo, .pirate, gopher and null. You have to setup your own computer's DNS to access any of these; it's similar to the Tor Project's use of .onion for sites only accessible when "tunneling" your connection through Tor. Unlike the "darknet" service i2p, you can access any of the "standard" TLDs (top-level domains) through OpenNIC, like .com, .net and .co.uk. OpenNIC also allows you to access .onion sites without tunneling through Tor, although I wonder if using both wouldn't add at least a little more layer of security to your browsing. Â Another site using the OpenNIC alternative root system is BlockAid Public DNS. The .pirate domain was started by the representative of the United States "Pirate Party" in response to the criminal crackdown on sites offering free sharing of copyrighted content, such as The Pirate Bay, Demonoid and MegaUpload. I am sure recent events such as the arrest of MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom, and the Swedish government's arrangement to have TPB founder "Anakata" arrested and extradited from Cambodia to face sentencing in his home country of Sweden, will increase people's demand for a citizen-oriented "free" networking system. spscwork
The problem with free domain names is that they are free for everyone, so when they expire anyone can take them. Â I just spent an entire year setting up my website then four days after the domain expires and before I can renew it, it stars redirection to http://searchremagnified.com/?dn=SPOW.TK&pid=7POX57615&_=1347727474. kyoushuu
I only found out today that the .ga domain name is also free, other sites are not saying anything about it. The provider is the same as the one that provides .tk, .ml and .cf domains, so they probably offer the same service. You could register all .tk, .ml, .cf and .ga domains at http://www.freenom.com instead of visiting http://my.dot.tk, http://www.point.ml, http://www.my.cf and http://www.my.ga so that all of your domains are in a single account (each one has their own login page otherwise, though they are all under the same company )

i7Grendel
Just over a year after my last update (happy 2014 everyone!) I've updated the list again, this time with a few new providers and domains, as well as a fairly complete list of all active Interdots subsidiaries I could find. I myself do not frequent this forum anymore but it saddens me to see this forum is a lot more quiet than 2 years ago when I still visited this forum daily. In the mean time, I have grown to owning both my own free hosting company as well as working for possibly the world's largest free hosting provider.
