  1. X10hosting is pretty decent, from what I've heard. I'm almost positive they offer .NET hosting, which is really odd because they've never offered ASP classic. They have PHP, but no classic. A lot of my web developer friends use them and swear by them religiously. A business partner and I use brinkster, and it's also pretty decent... but it really depends on the scope of your project. If you need tons of bandwidth, obviously a paid service will be a necessity somewhere down the line. But now I'm ranting. The point I'm trying to make is, "x10 good."
  2. Honestly, it all depends on your site. Advertising is always a great thing from a webmaster's point of view, but when you get it too cluttered, it drives potential viewers away. A lot of sites use affiliate programs for product sales, too... it's pretty useful if you have good stuff to sell, obviously. The only other revenue source that I can think of at the moment would be subscriptions. The usefulness of it all really depends on what you're offering, but certain sites benefit from having viewers pay a monthly / yearly subscription to access premium features.
  3. I still remember all my little "learning aids" from elementary school with the pretty pictures of all the planets... and pluto was always my favorite. To be honest, it kind of irritates me that everybody made such a big deal about such a technical classification. What kind of difference does it make to de-planetize it? Yes, I'm sure it has something to do with personal fame, e.g. the fame of the person responsible for the reclassification... but it's just so irritating. To me, pluto has always been a planet, and it always will be. I might even make a t-shirt that says something like that, just because I care about poor pluto that much. Yeah, I know. I'm weird.
  4. I've recently been considering writing a small book on an application of a certain philosophy. I'll tell you all more as it nears fruition. I'm curious... Ethics. Taken from a purely societal and not religious standpoint, it's clear that having some sort of ethical and moral backing keeps the general population from acting against society's best interests. For example, defined ethics prevent the masses from looting buildings and killing each other every day. So, that being said, my question is this: What happens when the individual (i.e. yourself, but nobody else) decides to completely forego ethics to better themselves? This isn't considering societal constraints (like jail), but consider the hypothetical situation where you can walk all over your fellow man to get more out of life. What's stopping you from doing it if society can't stop you, if everybody else keeps acting in accordance to their own ethics, and if it's been proven that there is no afterlife? I realize this is an extremely odd and vague question... intentionally so. Sadly, it's probably a bit hard to understand too... nevertheless, I'm curious to see your takes on it.

    Eclipse

I'm in Idaho, and I saw the eclipse perfectly. I actually had no idea that it was about to happen... I was outside with my fiancee, enjoying the night atmosphere and looking out over the town, when suddenly I glance up by complete chance and catch it. I've gotta say, I was pretty surprised. The last one I saw was about ten years ago, and I knew that one was coming... haha.
  6. Holy cow, 95% male? That's crazy... I guess it's just like an online frat, then.
  7. I'm a nineteen year old college kid who runs his own webcomic, as well as numerous online businesses and one offline one. My life is pretty darn spiffy, if I do say so myself... even though I'm usually pretty busy. I'm a huge fan of target shooting, and I'm also a total car fanatic. And by "car," I'm not talking about your mom's Honda. I mean real automobiles, things that have at least four hundred horsepower, stock. I'm picky, but I know what I like. Other than that, I enjoy drawing, animating, filmmaking, and composing music.
  8. Honestly Wizard, I don't see anything wrong with Trippin's opinion. It's true that truly great web ideas are few and far between nowadays, and if somebody really wants to make it big on the internet, sharing novel ideas is like revealing a trade secret before a product can be published. It's just common sense. That being said, as far as web content itself, I've gotta express my opinion about Flash. I guarentee you that in two years, most of the major sites will be running on Flash - it's just so versatile. About 90% of my clients request flash-only pages specifically... it's definitely a growing technology, especially since it can now interface with PHP/ASP pretty easily. Imagine having a pretty flash frontend and a powerful database-driven backend. Scary-cool, huh?
  9. I absolutely hate it when animals die in movies. They could kill off entire planets, one person at a time, and I wouldn't bat an eye... but when the doggie gets hurt, I go nuts. That being said, I didn't think it was as good as it could've been. The original trailers implied that he really was the "last man on earth;" we see that isn't true. I'm still waiting for the movie they advertised. :S
  10. Oh jeez, I remember runescape. First online game I ever tried... I think I was twelve. I got all my friends to play it, got all the best stuff, killed them, and then took their stuff. To this day, I think they still hate me for it. When I'm in the same room as em, I just get that feeling like they're staring at the back of my head, burning a hole in my brain with their eyes so they can take my rune armor.
  11. Interesting, yet not too practical. I'm sure at some point in the future, everybody will have one and they'll be as commonplace as an inkjet nowadays, but that might take a long time. For now, I really don't see too much of a use for em, at least in a mainstream market.
  12. In all honesty, the internet is sliding more and more toward flash-based webpages. I work as a web developer, and about 90% of my clients request flash work. I'd say learning that would be key.
  13. It's possible that there's something else out there... but not probable. I personally believe that life exists because of a series of extremely convienent coincidences, including the positioning of the sun and the contents of the earth's atmosphere. If the universe really did go on "forever," there will feasbily be another set of circumstances similar to earth's, and thus the potential for life. But do we really know that the universe is infinite?
  14. Thank you. This is exactly the problem with taking guns away from the people. I'm from the US, and I'm an ardent defender of the second amendment - I go to the shooting range twice a week, and I'm always armed. Put simply, people who are not criminals will not hurt anybody with guns. But no matter what, criminals will always find a way to get what they want, guns included. By taking them away from the people who legimately need protection, they'll have no way of defending themselves against another gun.
  15. I've never been in a vehicle with Sync, but it sounds like a pretty good idea. However, the speech recognition would need to be pretty decent - I can see people talking on their cellphones or to the rest of the people in their cars, and the system interpreting it as a music change request. "No, I didn't say 'Thriller!'"
  16. Back in the day (a.k.a. fourth grade), I started making games with QBASIC. It's not very functional nowadays outside of its own little niche community, but it's perfect for learning the principles of programming. I write hundreds of lines of code per day now, usually in three different languages at the same time. One thing about programming is, regardless of the language used, the basic principles are the same. You have variables, functions, and conditionals - just different ways of representing them. Well, unless you're talking about Assembly.
  17. I don't understand the firefox hype. Basically, I see a bunch of people advocating for it for the sole reason that "everybody else does it." I've always been a huge fan of IE, and I still am. The newest release has fixed many of the safety issues, and frankly it loads faster than firefox. That's basically all that matters to me. So, I'm an IE fan.
  18. While I agree with the notion that software piracy should be better monitored, I don't approve of monitoring the torrent channels. They do have a lot of legitimate uses, and from what I've read, they're used for information sharing between hospitals as well. Having some sort of entity that monitors every piece of torrent traffic would probably slow things down a lot, which might even cost lives. Sounds silly, but if somebody dies because the government doesn't want Jimmy listening to an illegal copy of Fall Out Boy, that's a sad state of affairs.
  19. Restored '89 Z28 IROC-Z. Oh baby. Let's see your little ricers top that.
  20. I remember good ol' Netscape. They basically started the tabbed browsing trend... I'm not sure if they actually designed the system first, but they were the first browser to make it mainstream. I can still remember the days where, as a little kid, I had to use netscape to play some cartoon network trading card game online because IE couldn't handle it. Which is awkward, because I'm a total IE > Firefox person now.

I heard them in a local coffee shop a few months ago and was very interested. I tried listening to some of their songs on their myspace, but they were all for a film soundtrack that the band made. To make matters worse, I can't find an album locally for anything. I guess I'll just have to order one. But from what I can remember, they're worth it.
  22. 90s movie... Tim Robbins. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the greatest films ever created. The entire film is just swimming in symbolism, and when you figure out what's "really happening," it's mindblowing. What makes it even better is that, although there's a big brainbender at the end, the film gives you enough to figure it out right off the bat... yet the film isn't ruined by any means. Any fans out there? If you haven't seen it, I won't spoil it for ya; just go rent it asap.
  23. Too many ricers for me. I was actually happy to see some muscle cars in the second movie, regardless of how horrible it was. But in terms of realism... oh gawd. There's a part where they claim a Supra has $15k invested in it, yet it smokes a Ferrari. Not gonna happen.
  24. I am such a huge fan of the Silent Hill series... it's not even funny. The symbolism in each one is amazing, and the fact that you're scared because of the environment (and the engrossing plot) instead of something jumping out at you really speaks volumes to me. Anybody else a fan? I'd have to say my favorites are, in order: 4, 2, 3, 1. Most people didn't like The Room, but I happened to find it amazing - I can't see how you can miss the psychological symbolism in it. But 2 is a masterpiece all in itself. I'm going to buy a PS3 just for SH5.
  25. Yoko Ono. Or, as I call her, "Yucko oh-no!"
