  1. Really? I kind of doubt that, but maybe you're right. Where did you learn all this stuff, then?

Too much time on my hands. I experiment and tweak nonstop, and for a brief time, that was with Apache and co. on Slackware 10.

Yes it is. As someone who has the "skills and/or knowledge", I can judge others on those standards.

Sure, except you have nothing to base your judgments on other than the one person that said he doesn't know how to do anything. Wizard might not care, but I cannot tolerate your condescending tone. djbob, you're generally a nice guy, which is why I'm venting about this.

  2. Your point seems to be that I am acting too condescendingly.

    Very much so.

It's not that easy. There is absolutely no free text source that can explain Linux server admin to you. To setup the HelioHost server exactly as I have, I've had to email people, post to newsgroups, post to forums, etc., not to mention random guess-and-check solutions. And I always check Google and Wikipedia before I ask a question... I'm not going around asking dumb questions. Don't make assumptions about things you don't understand.

Ah, but my friend, I do understand. It's not for you to say if anyone else does or does not have the skills and/or knowledge, once again.

  3. I haven't seen a single notebook that can stand up to the macbook air, I just think your mad like me because we can't afford it :)

A Macbook Pro, same pricing as the Air, has many more features, is many times more powerful, and is many times more durable. The only thing the Air is good for is watching a laptop snap in half.

  4. Yea while I have been surfing the forums and replying it would randomly quit. I think its something to do with the sites error. I also believe it is fairly unique to me because I'm using Zone alarm force field. If it helps I'm using firefox also to surf here. I also have my web development add on saying theres an error in the right lower corner. Any ideas how to fix this without closing my force field?

If it's just you, then none of us would have any idea.

    Oh, and it's just you.

  5. djbob,

The members of this forum that have posted on this thread may or may not have had mediocre Linux experience from whatever mediocre Linux distribution they may or may not run. It's true, people go to college to learn how to set up and maintain server stacks of all sorts of operating platforms, learning how to manage and store data both properly and effectively. However, it takes no longer than five minutes to explain how to restart apache, mysql, etc., especially if you've done your duties as an admin both correctly and effectively, djbob. On top of that, what's another ten to twenty minutes on how to move through WHM and pointing a person to a manual? Any computer-savvy user can pick up CentOS's (or RHEL's, they only differ by the branding) manual and skim through to find how to do even the trivial of things, such as running yum to search for packages as well, if you'd like to take it that far.

djbob, the point I am trying to get across is simple. If you're going to bring up trust issues, don't pick the half-assed excuse. You chose the "I am the omniscient ruler of HelioHost/Net. Only I am able to teach myself such things. The rest of you must get a college education before reaching my level! Go, now! There is nothing you can do 'till then but to grovel at my feet." At least go with something sane like, "I don't know any of you; you could perform malicious actions on mah serverz! OMGZZZS DOOD." (that won't even make you look like an egomaniac).

    Demize,

Knowing bash commands is not a unique trait and nothing to gloat about... or even mention... at all. Any half-decent *nix operator knows the standard crap.

  6. Also, If bob isn't going to activate accounts in 24 hours then he shouldnt have said it would take 24 hours in the email.

Perhaps you just fail at reading. In the message that shows up after you hit register: Please note your website will not be active until it is approved by the administrator (usually around a 24 hour wait).

No where does he guarantee your account in 24 hours in that message. djbob (not bob) slips up a lot and gets behind on the registration approvals a lot as well. If you've waited an excessive amount of time, PM him with details and he'll get right on it as he has done in the past.

  7. rct, it depends. If you can read manuals, wikis, or sift through posts effectively, then you can handle just about any Linux distribution with ease. However, many people coming straight from Windows lack this ability. Ubuntu and co. are Linux-for-Dummies distributions, go ahead and use them.

Mandriva is good if you need something completely n00by.

Mandriva is on the exact same level as Ubuntu as far as difficulty level goes.

I, personally, would reccomend Ubuntu. Of couse, I am THE most geeky teen you will ever hear of.

If you were a true geek, you would be running a flavor of BSD on your AMD-K5.

On a side note, I believe we've already had this "what linux to use???/?///slashslashquestionmark" discussion before.

  8. But why then are there more programs compatible with the PC as opposed to the Mac platform?

Same reason why IBM used to be the de facto standard in computing.

Most big corporations and businesses are oriented in such a way that they will do whatever makes them the most profit and will watch, but not act on, alternatives unless they prove to be profitable. That is why some programs are beginning to have Mac ports.

If we take a look around, we can see that we are on the edge of yet another paradigm shift in computing. Firefox and the rest of the open source movement are receiving attention from the mass market. Firefox continues to burn away at Microsoft's IE market share and will continue to do so until IE stops sucking. IE8 doesn't exactly sound promising. Check it out.

  9. My personal opinion, djbob, is to put it in every area you feel like in order to get you the maximum profit. My only request is that the ads aren't those annoying flashing "You just one a free <insert prize her>".

It's up to Google, they're Google ads of course. Those flashing ones give the most money per click.

  10. The least obtrusive place so far (currently the site footer as of this posting) will be the place that will generate the least revenue. Take into consideration that Heliohost will no longer exist if djbob feels that this place is burning a hole in his pocket.

  11. Both of them will give you viruses because they open ports on your computer and people take advantage of that, but if you continue to use it get port guard or something similar.

What? That's way off base. Both of them will give you viruses because they both connect to the same gnutella network, and on that gnutella network, morons share viruses.

  12. Sorry, I'm not running this currently :P but I could have it up soon. I don't post a lot, and I don't keep a lot in hand, hence why I'm out of "helions". I actually have 28'000 helions in the bank. (Check it out!)

Yes, so sorry I'm not running it at the moment, but looking forward to it in the near future.

I would like to join please..........

Look at what the message actually says. He says that he's not running it right now.

    Christ

  13. In a year, the 8800GTX will be nothing. Actually, you can get several competitively performing graphics cards for the price of one 8800GTXs. The DirectX 10 hype has duped many people into buying a Dx10 card.

Basically I think I hear them mention:

    1. Intel has a higher clock speed

    2. AMD can execute commands more quickly

Outdated info. This was true with Intel's Netburst microarchitecture, but things have changed since then. Intel's Core 2 Duo line will match Athlon's FX series and even exceed with Intel's Core 2 Duo Extreme line. On top of that, Intel supports the open source movement better than AMD (which they're grossly lacking in).

  14. Hello,

It's been a day and my account hasn't been validated yet , do you have any idea as to when it will be validated?

    Thanks.

Your account will be validated when djbob gets to it, s'all.

  15. The scientific research over global warming is rather inconclusive. Global warming itself could just be a natural thing because of the sun's cycles. I've read somewhere that the mean surface temperatures of other planets in this solar system have also inscreased.

Can't see what Kelso means by that we'll have the opposite of an ice age in a hundred years. Kelso's graph kind of makes my point. It's similar to the graph of a sine function. It just goes up and down. You can see the curve of the mean temperatures from 1880 to present and that it just looks like a cycle. It starts getting colder, at it's peak of cold, then goes back up. We're still a while before the peak of warming though. The graph has a slight bump at 1940 though, which is when gas-powered machines became more common. At this rate, it's should be back to the zero on that graph in another thirty to fourty years.

  16. I'm partial to the E61 or the E70 Nokis business phones.

The iPhone is $400. However, why would you ever want to trade a phone WITH buttons for one without? If you want a touch phone, a Windows Mobile phone is a much better choice in terms of functionality.
