  1. ewwww mac!!!

    ;)

It's not so much that it's a Mac; it's more the fact that there aren't many customization options so that just about no Mac desktops look special.

You can purchase a theme hack, but that's besides the point.

  2. QBASIC is about learning. That's what most colleges start their novice programmers on. That, Pascal, or some other very generic language.

This would be true if we lived a few years back, but I find that a lot of colleges have moved on and now start off their students with either C or Java.

you can do a lot of things in VB.net without even touching the keyboard (thanks to the form designer with which you can set properties and create events by clicking!).
But you're not learning anything that way.

You're learning how to half-[bleeped!] your projects later in life when you're doing this as a career. That's learning something.

Second, what is so great about being able to utilize open source tools and libraries? What if the open source tools and libraries are worse than the closed source ones?

Open source libraries are generally cross-platform, sans the obscure libraries. While the target platform card could be played, that's the idea.

  3. I don't recommend you start with C, C++, or anything low-level like that - you'll get way too confused as those languages are very hard to learn.

I disagree. Many programming courses start you out with C. It's better to get used to more complicated concepts in the beginning than to get used to a higher level language and having to struggle with the harder concepts later on, in my opinion.

  4. Lol... I guess it makes sense. The newest versions for Linux/Apache are still free though, right?

MySQL is free for both Windows and Linux, as well as a variety of other OSes. Only the subscription-based MySQL Enterprise, which provides support and training along with a few enterprise-level tools, costs money. MySQL is licensed under the GNU GPL, so there really isn't any worry.

  5. Responsibilities include:
    • You will be assigned a list of accounts. You have to check each account at least once every week to make sure there is no content breaking the ToS and that they are not abusing system resources.

Isn't this list rather large? How many mods are you planning to have?

  6. You quoted me from half a year ago. As dated as the statement is, that fact is still straight as it is still currently impossible because the ITER has not been constructed yet.
If you want to get into details...

You said nuclear fusion was impossible. It is indeed possible. Examples: the Sun, a hydrogen bomb, the JET experimental reactor. QED :P

The difference is that you knew what I implied and twisted my statement while you made no such implication.

  7. Yeah. I know PHP spits out HTML as output, doesn't python do the same?

It spits out HTML, but PHP/python using HTML?

I mean, does php have any alternative way of output? The Internet is encased in < and >.

PHP isn't limited to the web, even though that is it's primary use. There are plenty of PHP wrappers for graphical toolkits. PHP-GTK, PHP-QT, PHP SDL, etcetc as well as 'Print "Hello World!"' and such from the console.

  8. Pfft. Pidgin connects to proprietary internet messaging networks (sans Jabber). The source might be free, but the networks you use aren't.
You use WLM too, mister open source :P

Cue the immature "I never said I didn't use WLM" argument ;)

I do know what I prefer, however.

  9. Nuclear fusion has nothing to do with anti-matter. Currently, nuclear fusion is impossible because we have no way of containing the massive amount of heat generated by the process. We can't contain anti-matter because it destroys any matter it touches. Completely different.
Actually, the soon-to-be-constructed ITER will be capable of a sustained nuclear fusion reaction with a net energy gain.

You guys ought to get your facts straight...

You quoted me from half a year ago. As dated as the statement is, that fact is still straight as it is still currently impossible because the ITER has not been constructed yet.

  10. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Nowadays, I love them both equally because of that. On the DS, I have a lot of fun games, while on the PSP, I have my emulators, Mega Man, and great homebrew.

psp is like a computer, it has internet music pictures video games and radio while the DS has only games. also, a game has been made to make the DS have internet.

The browser sucks, transcoding video sucks, the photo viewer is subpar, music player and streamer lacks ogg vorbis support as well as support for many other codecs, and the sound output is only par. My Nokia N800 surpasses it in just about every media aspect.
