I installed the newest phpBB version directly without using Fantastico-thing...

I just uploaded the phpBB directory to my FTP, setup Database, and then install.

Must be honest, that the newest version of phpBB is pretty cool, it's featuring a nice Anti-Spam feature, but it could be better.

If the user has not posted once, then they're in one category (if activated), if they have 1 post or more, they're placed in "Registered Users" :)

You can install any script using FTP. In fact, I prefer standard FTP over auto-installers. As far as forums go, you should check out MyBB. I use that and it's great.

The server won't allow a fresh phpbb install.

You have to use Fantastico? I am new to this server, and all others that I have used don't seem to care.

More like the installation will fail. The install page will bring up a blank. I've already tried to troubleshoot it, but to no avail.
