I noticed recently that my the "drawings" section of my site broke, giving a "500 Internal Server Error" every time anyone tried to access it. I used ComicCMS, which I really like, but hasn't been updated in some years now. So I thought maybe some PHP update or something broke it. I backed up the whole ComicCMS installation on my computer and deleted that part of the site. I was trying to see if I could start using wordpress instead, and installed it through Softaculous. However, whenever I try to access the wordpress page/wordpress admin, I get the 500 Internal Server Error again. Why? I tried uninstalling Wordpress, and installing it to a new folder in case something weird with the "dogboydog.com/drawings" location was going on, but I'm still getting the same error.

Wordpress is supposedly installed here:

URL http://dogboydog.com/art Admin URL

http://dogboydog.com/art/wp-admin/

What can I do to fix this? Both things getting the same error makes me think that maybe once this is fixed I can go back to ComicCMS. For testing purposes, I reuploaded ComicCMS at dogboydog.com/drawings.

Let me know if you can help, thanks

I am not getting a 500 Internal Error when I visit your site. Your site is working fine for me. Please clear your cache.

That's so bizarre. I showed it to several people and it wasn't working for any of them. Weird.

I cleared my cache and am still getting the error. I successfully loaded my /drawings/ page after your post once, but am now still unable to look at it.

here's the error I get:

"Apache/2.2.16 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.16 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_bwlimited/1.4 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_wsgi/3.3 Python/2.7.1 Server at dogboydog.com Port 80"

I just got the same one trying to access dogboydog.com/cpanel too.

Just tried on chrome (I usually use firefox) and got the same error. Just asked someone else again to check and they're getting the same error. They cleared their cache as well and are still getting it.

Did you change something ? Now I am seeing 500 error on your site.

500 errors can be caused by a lot of things. The most common are
  1. Exceeding Process Limit The solution is to not run as many processes. Opening cpanel, connecting to FTP, checking mail, connecting to webdisk, etc all increase your process count, and if you exceed your limit php will show 500 errors since it cannot start a new php process. This sometimes affects only the webmaster since opening cPanel and FTP etc is common when you're editing your site, but normal users won't have these errors since they will only be accessing your website not all the other services. The process limit is higher on Johnny so for some websites the solution to 500 errors might be to switch servers.
  2. Syntax Error in .htaccess If you have a syntax error in one of your .htaccess files it can cause a 500 error. The easiest way to check if this is the case is to delete or rename your .htaccess files and see if the 500 error goes away.
  3. Incorrect Permissions If the script or the directory that the script is in doesn't have the correct permissions it can cause 500 errors too. If you're running a php script the file permission should be 644. If you're running a cgi script it should have 755 permissions. Your directories should have 755 or 750 permissions.
  4. Exceeding Time Limit If your script exceeds the time limit it can be killed by the system which will also result in a 500 error. The solution to this problem is to break your long executing scripts into multiple faster scripts that can call each other. For instance longscript.php always results in a 500 error because it exceeds the time limit, but if script1.php runs for a short time, and then calls script2.php which calls script3.php they can together execute the same code as longscript.php without exceeding the time limit and being killed.
  5. High Server Load If the server is currently experiencing high server load scripts can return a 500 error when they would normally work. This is more common on Johnny than Stevie since Johnny is more unstable, and accounts that cause high load on Stevie are suspended. There isn't really anything that can be done about high load 500 errors other than trying again later when the load is lower.

The only thing I changed was that I linked to the drawings page again from the main index. I don't know what would be causing it... I didn't set any permissions or write any htaccess files ( I don't even know what they are). But I am getting this on dogboydog.com/cpanel, dogboydog.com/drawings, and before I uninstalled wordpress just now I was getting it on the wordpress directory too.

Just checked my drawings page again and now it's loading :/ What would be causing this? Why would it sometimes have an error and sometimes not, besides the high server load possibility?

Continuously working through cPanel can cause 500 errors.

This sometimes affects only the webmaster since opening cPanel and FTP etc is common when you're editing your site.

But you and others are seeing it. Also I don't have cpanel nor FTP open and I'm still getting the errors. I wonder if my thunderbird is checking the email too much or something. I'm turning the checking of those accounts to manual only -- hopefully that works. When I closed thunderbird just now the error went away, so maybe that's really it.
