[Answered] Required Php Version And Joomla Update

Upgrading php has been discussed a few times.

I still would like to ask though. Is there any risk that prevents upgrading from 5.3.8 to the latest 5.3.xx release?

Or is it a technical issue as in package management?

That still doesn't answer the question :)

5.3.8 to any 5.3.xx update should be straight forward and very safe unless it is some technical issue with installing updates as in distribution package management, etc...

There is a golden rule when it comes to live server: if it works, don't touch it.

Normally, you would have a development server that is an exact copy of the live server.

On there, you can mess around all you want to see if changes are doing what they are supposed to do. Then you can apply those changes to the live server. If somethings goes wrong, you simply remove that dev server. And make a fresh copy of the live server.

We don't have that luxury. If we need to change something we need to do on the actual servers.

Updating something may seem pretty straightforward, but when you do it for a big server, like stevie, there are a lot of uncertainties and there is a possibility that something goes wrong. Even the tiniest thing could cripple the entire server.

For example: a signup script or dependencies stop working, a service won't start anymore, etc...

And when that happens, you have trouble. The best example is the current InnoDB issues. That resulted in Roundcube stop working.

That is why we don't update stevie. As is, we know stevie is stable and working good. And it may continue to work for centuries to come, but with slightly outdated software.

That is a sacrifice we need to make to garantuee that stevie keeps working.

Fair enough :)

Wordpress still only requires 5.2 as well but will eventually need 5.3.xx somewhere in the 4.x line. Hopefully it won't be higher than 5.3.8 :)

I have read your posts and I am aware that the issue I have raised involves system administration strategies. For me working with the current version is not a problem, since my site is a test.

Thanks for your attention.
