[Solved] Silly Question

Hiya's. I've found that there may be something hinkey with Johnny that is preventing the Package Manager in SMF to work properly. When I try to install a Package/Modification it tosses a 500 error. They are not huge files, I think SimplePortal is under 300k and it tosses the error out. So it should not be long enough to time out. So do themes, and anything else that it tries to install. I've checked all the file/directory permissions and they are set properly.

The process is pretty straight forward. Download the file from the Simple Machine Forum site. Go to the Admin panel in your forum, and chose Package Manager. Click 'upload' and browse your HDD for the file. It then downloads it, decompresses it, copies the configuration/new files it needs to, and then poof. 'Your package has been installed, you should see the changes'

Instead of that, it tosses a 500 error during the forum refresh.

Now, for packages, and themes this is really no big deal. I mean, I've worked around it a tad, so that's no biggie. Until... Always an 'until' eh? LOL Until I went to install the security update I was informed of today. I treated it like any other package, and of course it tossed me the 500 error. This time; I am sure it's because something was interrupted during an edit or something, the 500 error jacked up the whole works. I ofcourse had a back up, and restored it with no problems. I then tried my package work around, however that failed also. Since this package is mostly pure configuration file edits rather than copying new files for new functions, the 500 error jacked up the editing process.

With this in mind, I am wanting to move to Stevie for stability, and to see if I can get this 500 error to stop.

I was wondering. May I KEEP my Johnny site epicdeeds.tk until my Stevie one is out of Queue? The domains will be different.

New Domain: innerflame.tk

From what I understand we can request to have a site on both machines if we want/need to. But I don't need two, and I am not greedy. Just a temporary thing and then I'll free up Johnny when Stevie calls to play.

The reason is so I can continue to jack around with the install I have, work out all the little burps and such, and when innerflame.tk comes live make a backup, then delete epicdeeds.tk From what I understand it takes a couple/few days for Stevie to process new accounts, and I'd like to use that time for configuration/tweaking/learining and such. /shrugs

If not, then I understand, and will go through the 4-5 day process of moving it as per layedout in the instructional post. Just let me know one way or another so I know how to proceed.

Thanks a ton guys,

Elite Deeds

Here's some of the errors I get in the log. It says the 'file does note exist'. Sometimes a refresh works, sometimes a cache clear refresh works, sometimes it never recovers from the 500.

Thanks again,

ED

Your site is loading fine for me. Have you read this?

500 errors can be caused by a lot of things. The most common are

  1. Exceeding Process Limit The solution is to not run as many processes. Opening cpanel, connecting to FTP, checking mail, connecting to webdisk, etc all increase your process count, and if you exceed your limit php will show 500 errors since it cannot start a new php process. This sometimes affects only the webmaster since opening cPanel and FTP etc is common when you're editing your site, but normal users won't have these errors since they will only be accessing your website not all the other services. The process limit is higher on Johnny so for some websites the solution to 500 errors might be to switch servers.
  2. Syntax Error in .htaccess If you have a syntax error in one of your .htaccess files it can cause a 500 error. The easiest way to check if this is the case is to delete or rename your .htaccess files and see if the 500 error goes away.
  3. Incorrect Permissions If the script or the directory that the script is in doesn't have the correct permissions it can cause 500 errors too. If you're running a php script the file permission should be 644. If you're running a cgi script it should have 755 permissions. Your directories should have 755 or 750 permissions.
  4. Exceeding Time Limit If your script exceeds the time limit it can be killed by the system which will also result in a 500 error. The solution to this problem is to break your long executing scripts into multiple faster scripts that can call each other. For instance longscript.php always results in a 500 error because it exceeds the time limit, but if script1.php runs for a short time, and then calls script2.php which calls script3.php they can together execute the same code as longscript.php without exceeding the time limit and being killed.
  5. High Server Load If the server is currently experiencing high server load scripts can return a 500 error when they would normally work. This is more common on Johnny than Stevie since Johnny is more unstable, and accounts that cause high load on Stevie are suspended. There isn't really anything that can be done about high load 500 errors other than trying again later when the load is lower.

I wonder if maybe you were trying to load your page during a high load time maybe?

The worst that will happen from having two accounts without prior permission is they will both be suspended. Then you just have to post in the suspended subforum to get one or the other unsuspended. It's not really that big of a deal if you don't have a lot of users yet and you're still just getting your site set up. The average time that a new domain will show as queued on Stevie is actually quite a bit less than Johnny. It's just a little harder to get a Stevie account since we limit the number of new accounts per day.

I just tried to install a them that is 376k, and it gave another 500 error. The only thing I've in mt .htaccess is listing off, and a redirect to the /smf/ directory. I had no connection with FTP, mail, or Cpanel. Below is my .htaccess and just a couple of the errors. As you can see, it's always in the 'theme' or 'package' section that tosses the error the most. Less common is basic browsing and test posting.

I will happily make you and admin account; since the board is in mantainance mode atm, and let you try for your self. I will put a theme or package on my site that you can download to your machine and try to install via the forum interface. I've no problem with that.

I tried to sign up for a duplicate account as suggested, however it gave an error. I know that my IP is blocked/limited to one account, that's why I asked for access to both servers. I set my alarm so I could be awake during signup times, however I may have missed that window.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.

Thanks,

Epic Deeds

-edit-

For giggles I renamed my install, and used the install off of cPanel in Softaculous to see if I'd jacked up permissions or something goofy. It got to 6% and said 'connection lost'. However, the sub directory /smf was populated, so I fired it up. It loaded, I logged in, I went to package manager to install SimplePortal, and got the same 500 error. I went to themes and tried to install the Halloween one you saw, and it gave the same 500 error.

I hope this helps in running down the problem. Maybe you should try an install on a test site or something? Also, my test user; a friend of mine, does get the 500 errors, so it's not limited to the 'webmaster'/

Thanks again,

ED

I have tried to install MyPHP, and phpBB software also, with the same results. phpBB fails in install though. I've ensured permissions are proper according to installation instructions, and support forum feedback. I tried to install a theme. I had no FTP connections, no cPanel connection, and cleard my cache. below are from the error logs.

From SMF's error log.

[27-Oct-2013 09:16:46 America/Los_Angeles] PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/pdo_pgsql.so' - /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/pdo_pgsql.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

From cPanel error log

[Tue Oct 29 12:12:31 2013] [error] [client 207.119.156.97] File does not exist: /home/epicdeee/public_html/500.shtml, referer: http://www.epicdeeds.tk/smf/index.php?action=admin;area=theme;sa=admin;a0f044e0=2dead753033f651f7e502525c4dc5c7a

The site will go to the main page, it will allow a post; most of the time, however when I try to run any of the admin functions like package manager, theme manager, portal manager, it tosses a 500 error.

Both logs say the file does not exit for some reason.

Thanks

ED

Apparently my public_html is assigned to the wrong group. The rest of my files/directories; tmp, mail, public_ftp, and .softaculous belong to

user 75485 grp 75475

public_html belongs to

user 75485 grp 99

I'd change it myself but I don't have ssh access. Please put my public_html in the proper group, then it should be able to find the files.

Thanks a ton,

ED

A friend of mine tried to access the site. I was not even home, much less on FTP, cPanel, or anything else. Since she is the only one I've told about it, she was the only one there. So it can't be an issue of having 'to many connections', or 'server overload'.

Are we going to fix this? I mean, if ONE person can't log into the site and post on the forum, it's kinda useless as a forum eh?

I've had her try a few times, but those time I was on FTP, so I kinda gave it the benifit of the doubt.

Also, php mail does not work.

Thanks,

ED

Your public_html permissions and owner and group are correct. Your site is loading fine for me. If you're concerned about uptime I would recommend moving your site to Stevie, our production server, instead of Johnny, our experimental server. Since Johnny is experimental it has much higher load thresholds, and runs numerous unstable services. As such Johnny's uptime regularly varies between 85% to 95% while Stevie's uptime for the entire month of October was 99.96% and is almost always 99.8%+. If you're interested in moving here is the instructions: http://wiki.helionet.org/Moving_your_account
