I recently changed free hosts (due to offering no more free hosting) for my personal weather station site. I usually update it twice a day with FTP transfer of files using my weather station software. However on weekends and on certain days with notable weather I update it every 15 minutes during the day. But my current host won't allow me to do this as they are saying I am overloading the FTP server. With my current host I am forced it reduce it 2 hours which is not ideal.

My regular upload consists of 30 small graph images (1 to 15 kb) totalling 240 kb and a set of 14 html/ php web pages totalling 145kb. My Question is can you host my site using free web hosting and allow me to regular upload the files (as mentioned above) so that the site is updated with the data. I note many people who use my weather software for weather sites use free hosting but with my current host it is not working well. I hope that this host may be a suitable option. I look forward to a reply. It would be appreciated if this question is answered and not ignored.

I look forward to a reply.

There are already several weather stations hosted on our servers that I know of that operate through FTP the exact same way you are describing. We do have issues with excessive FTP users from time to time, but we're mostly concerned with abusive users not users that have a legitimate reason for using FTP so much. Some of the weather stations have exceeded our default FTP limits and had to apply for a white listing of their account. Every 15 minutes should be fine, but if you start updating more than once every 10 minutes or so that's when you might start running into problems. If your FTP connection stops working and you can no longer upload just post on the Customer Service forum to get the block resolved.

We also monitor the overall load that your account creates, but unless you're getting thousands of views to your site per hour or your run a lot scripts that run for several minutes at a time you probably won't get suspended for high load, but FTP does contribute a little to this load value of your account too. If you're curious how much load your account is creating on an average day you can always post and ask.

Thank you for your reply to my question. I won't be uploading anymore often than 15 minutes as that it quite sufficient which is more acceptable than every 2 hours! I intent to upload 24/7, I have uploading for a period of one hour in the morning, 1 hour in the evening and all day weekends or other days with notable weather.

I had trouble finding a host that gives decent space and features for the future of my site whilst allowing me to regularly FTP the files. It seems that HelioHost looks suitable. At the moment I get very few visitors and in the future I don't expect more than a few hundred visits a day but not too much on a hourly basis.

My site at the moment is very basis as simple html pages with some javascript and one php page which calls a text files to make monthly reports. I will eventually do up my site with some pages using stats with a database but that certainly won't have scripts that take a few minutes to process and I don't want to put unnecessary pressure on your system.

It is very good to hear that you allow this FTP as make my site more useful than it is at the moment. I would stay with my current host if not for the FTP trouble. If I decide to go move to HelioHost I will see how it goes and go from there.

Thanks for your understanding.

I have gave it some time to think about free hosting to use for my weather site and I have decided to go with Heliohost after continuing FTP problems with my current host.

Before I sign up I do have one question. In the Wiki, there is a page titled Signing up, http://wiki.helionet.org/Signing_up and it says there I should not use a Hotmail email address because Hotmail blocks all emails from Heliohost. Is this still occurring as I mainly only use Hotmail and it would be a bit annoying if I had to use another email service.

I look forward to an answer

People have reported that hotmail deletes our emails completely and doesn't even put them in the spam box. That's why that warning is there. Personally I signed up with a hotmail address to create my heliohost account and all the emails go straight to my inbox. Your mileage may vary. You can always change your email address later after you create your account if you're not receiving anything.

Thanks for answering my question. When I sign up in the near future I will use my Hotmail email address and see how it goes and change the email address if it does not work.

I tried signing up for an account using a Hotmail email address but it came up with the message of:

"We're sorry, but you cannot use a Hotmail error address with our service. Hotmail blocks our incoming emails."

I though that I would be able to use a Hotmail email and see if email does get to my Hotmail email account as per the last reply I received. Any insight would be most helpful.

My previous post may have been missed that I have been unable to register a web hosting account using a Hotmail email address.

It comes up with the message of:

"We're sorry, but you cannot use a Hotmail error address with our service. Hotmail blocks our incoming emails."

In the last reply I received it was said that after I register with Hotmail email address if I no emails make it thorough I can change the email address. But at the moment I am unable to register using a Hotmail email address.

Any insight would be appreciated.

When the sign up limit resets today in a few hours I will give it another attempt. I will certainly let you know if I do receive signup emails to my Hotmail account assuming that this time the sign up works.

Thanks for your help.

I tried to sign up with a Hotmail email and I was successful in registering the web hosting account. I also successfully received the sign up email to my Hotmail account but not straight to my Inbox. Receiving email from Heliohost seems for me to be working so far. Thanks for your help.
