  1. I'm already inspired by that italian web developer who made that site. Apparently he offers some tools useful for making horizontal sites, like the scrolling feature and arrows on the Horizontal Way. I want to follow that guy's blog, but I really don't know what the blog's RSS is showing... doesn't seem to be the posts...
  2. A problem I'm having is trying to get all the posts to actually be listed up horizontally - Browsers seem very eager to put one element below the other. When I'm looking at the site The Horizontal Way I see that they have had to define the width of the document's body. The JavaScript code that I use to cut up the posts into newspaper columns apparently needs to run before the body's width is defined... and I'm just beginning to learn JavaScript... ;-p Can't turn back yet though.
  3. Ofcourse I don't expect it to be much user-friendly, ;-p A name I might give the blog is "Why stuff doesn't work".
  4. ... for a blog. I was thinking of a horizontal blog - where the posts are listed up horizontally... with newspaper-like columns that cut the text into pieces. Hopefully I could add some JavaScript buttons to make it easily navigatable. After google-searching the ideas of horizontal sites and newspaper columns, I've seen it both roundly discouraged... but I'm inspired anyway ;-p I guess this is something I can do to figure out more PHP and JavaScript. If I eventually finish the theme I might begin blogging about crazy ideas on the blog.
  5. Dang, I guess my idea of gaining pagerank by clicking a link to the site was wrong, the links themselves are the ones that gives pagerank. This thread is so deleted.
  6. Now I've made a few threads without getting any replies, so this thread I make in the Other section as I don't want to get any undeserved post counts. This is however something that just struck me, and I don't know if it is possible... Anyway, according to Google PageRank is increased when high quality site's link to yours. With FireBug, you can edit the page you're viewing, and insert a link... Anyone follow? I don't know how Google works, so I really don't know if it would have any effect.
  7. Ever seen the widgets that people embed into their blog to let random people IM them easily? Not really sure about their purpose, but I wanted to check out what kinds of widgets of that type exists. Kinda cool, eh? Like, IM widgets I mean... I bet many of you know of Meebome already, I remember I saw that widget at a blog I read, but apparently the guy put it down after a theme change. Personally I think a link to my rather quiet IRC channel that I'm pretty much always logged into is enough, the channel is displayed in Mibbit which seems to be compatible even to those old computer's at my school. It obviously isn't just Meebo for Instant PM widgets, from a google search I see that there's quite a few others aswell. If I was going to try an Instand PM widget I think I would be considering the WIMZI AIM widget or Gizmo5 - out of what they're promising.

I'm pretty [bleeped!] happy with what I've made of the front page of my new forum: http://autist.site40.net/index.php Learning PHP at the same time as I tried to understand the SMF software and configure it for my needs.
  9. As that nextBBS beta forum software was abit of a pain, and that this other host provider that I found provides an amount of bandwidth that is... umm... different! I might actually make a new forum. I hope it doesn't hurt anyone too much if I give up my forum on Helio's host. Still, me blog produces huge quantities of traffic, I assure you.
  10. It was abit confusing when the summary said that "traffic viewed" (181.63 MB) in addition to "traffic not viewed" (90.61 MB) was less than what the cPanel said was the bandwidth transfer of this month (currently 505.88 MB), but I guess it adds up if I also include the bandwidth of other sections of the stats. It's abit bothersome that so much of the bandwidth seem to be used from the US (135.06 MB) when my whole site is in norwegian (23.15 MB). I'm not quite sure if this is the bandwidth I use, but I see that it is pretty much the same as "Traffic Viewed" in the summary: Authenticated users - Other logins (and/or anonymous users) - 181.63 MB. Google Bot also seem to drain alot of bandwidth (71.42 MB), I guess it might help if I make a robots.txt. I consider moving my blog again to another free cPanel host to get rid of some of the worry, and maybe also get a more simple blog URL adress.
  11. -TIMEJUMP- 7th Septemper and 19 percentage of bandwidth used - 464.85/2500 MB In the past few days I have edited the site alot with the File Manager, the wordpress panel and the admin panel for the forum. I have also installed SimplePie RSS parser which I spent some time figuring out, I used it to show the last site-relevant blog posts and news. Is there reason to worry? Should I maybe just stop editing the site so much? I'm still not sure if I understand the Awstats.
  12. I really enjoyed the Mibbit IRC client, I've added it to my site. I've seen that alot of people can't figure out the Java client, hope that isn't the case with Mibbit.
  13. Chronium Developer Documentation I wonder if someone like me who've just barely touched Visual Basic programming can begin modding on my chrome browser, like making left-vertical tabs for IRC chatrooms - that would be something...
  14. I've lost fate in humanity long ago... Hope this wasn't too little of a post, at least I've written longer ones before. ;-p
  15. Aspies for Freedom - a political site meant for autistic rights issues but has also welcomed alot of support for people on the autistic spectrum until recently (before the lockdown). A big concern is that this incident will discredit the wider movement, but AFF has a history of soap operas from before anyway.
  16. There's this forum that I haven't been much active on lately, turns out that it has went through quite history when I was distant though. I will try making a picture of what happened in a chronological list. 1. A member banned for continuously flaming members contacts the domain registrar of the site demanding it to be shut down based on presumed defamatory material on him on the forum - this guy is really just a truly irrational prick in my opinion. According to the following discussion a registrar isn't allowed to shut down the site, but they did just that for about four days just as warning. 2. Moderators decides to strict the rules because of inspection from the registrar. Several threads and posts are hidden that otherwise wouldn't have - this include threads that looks abit crazy like talk about conspiracy theories and stuff. At this time the moderator who is the wife of the owner of the city re-enters the forum after a long time, seeing mostly unfamiliar members. 3. Members gets upset about the censorship and begin to criticize the admins in a not-always-so-well-worded manner. 4. Admins suspends several people who show disagreement with the moderation for temporary bans, claiming that the bans are valid because of personal attacking against them. In this process the wife of the owner display an especially bad judgement to the members. 5. Members begin to move their community to an alternative forum. 6. Admins locks the whole forum and claims that the one establishing the alternative forum has with several other members orchestrated the whole mess and thus "ruined it for everyone else". Right now I gave a try at asking people at the new forum to forgive the admins of the old forum, so that we may return someday - site with a long history you see. People seemed very upset about what that has happened and basically flamed me for starting that thread - reminds me of the jacobins in the aftermath of the french revolution that I'm reading about nowadays. I hope this thing is an extreme case of what a soap opera can do to an online community.
  17. What the... They do not have a site-relevant chatroom system???? I thought they were geniuses enough to come up with something like that. ;-p Anyway, in my norwegian version there seems to be something called "JavaScript Console" - I don't know what they call it in the English version, but it seems to have many of the futures of FireBug. I haven't checked it out much though.
  18. Ok, what about a mostly two-dimensional Open Source MMO? In two-dimensional I mean that you see the characters from top straight down, like in that old lego online game, Galidor Quest (PS: Large Animal's version can't save your game, bummer). This way you could make it easy for pretty much anyone to make an area to the game. There should be a nice scenario editor aswell. To give more feel to the game you could have a box on a corner of the screen where you see snippets of videos, appropriate for the scenes, actions and characters you meet. I don't know if it would break copyright rules if you suddenly saw an exploding car from a James Bond movie. It could also be a box where you see images, animated or whatever, as avatars of other players nearby. It should be possible to make pretty complicated stuff out of it - you could have a dynamic world that have aspects from many different game genres, and as it is 2D simple more people can join expanding the game. You also get rid of the camera problems you get in 3D games. The idea is ofcourse, to have different mods to the MMO for different servers.
  19. Haven't tried it yet as I am on a school's computer, but just want to say - I'm TOTALLY dependent on Firebug, if Chrome doesn't have anything like that, I probably wont touch it.
  20. One MMO genre you've probably already heard of is MMORPG, here's another one: Massive Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy - An example of an Real Time Strategy (RTS) game would be Age of Empires. Wikipedia Article I really like the idea of being a demigod or some kind of VIP with the power of controlling people. It appears as if it is difficult to make a pleasant game in the genre though when reading the wikipedia article. I've tried Dreamlords, but it appears as if the game supersedes my graphic card. (screenshot) EVE Online doesn't appear to be in either genre from what I've read, wikipedia just calls it an MMO. I'm thinking abit about what would make the ultimate MMO - Anyone played Freelancer? A space sim game, not an MMO, but it had a multiplayer aspect. The thing about it was that the game had this great modding community, and people had servers for Multiplayer gaming with these different mods - bringing MMO game modding to the masses would be cool. Would be complicated though I guess, but hey, that's MMO!
  21. I've yet to handle any real programming language. I did manage "Kids Programming Language" and the macro system on World of Warcraft, but I really don't know where to start when it comes JavaScript or PHP. I get the impression that there are some free microsoft programs that might help when doing PHP, they're called "IDE", right?
  22. If we are all supposed to die at the swish of a second at some point, I wouldn't like to know - unlesss it was preventable.
  23. Nice to hear Disk space usage: 43.72/250 MB I have first of all uploaded the installation program for my forum - which was about five and a half megabytes. Also a few minor things like the self-made theme for my blog and the logo on my forum - I wonder if the logo is too big, but at least it is PNG so I guess the file size souldn't be that big.
  24. 226.16/2500 MB When checking awstats I see that I have during the five days since I started my site used: Pages_____Hits_____Bandwidth 20702_____29129___61.00 MB And this is an acquainted who is only participating on the forum: 1348______2751____13.77 MB I wonder if it has something to do with that nextBBS forum beta-software.
  25. So I installed a forum, and transfered my wordpress blog from the other host-domain seeing that there's currently no ads on this one as of yet. Now at the start of my forum, which I don't expect to become very popular that soon, I see that "Monthly Bandwidth Transfer" in percentage has been ticking up one each day. As I've just entered the world of web-development I'm not very knowledgable about bandwidth, I just read the wikipedia article, and get kinda worried when I read: ... eek. I suspect that most of the bandwidth currently used is from me editing my website and forum, but something tells me that others have a better idea.
