I am in the process making a blog/portfolio as creative outlet for photography. At the moment I am modifying my wordpress theme heavily. Before I put the site into beta and start blogging and such i would like your opinions on the site's visuals and layout.

There are some cron jobs that run at various low load parts of the night starting around midnight PST, but in general the servers never reboot. If they crash completely and are completely unresponsive to ssh and all forms of access then they will be rebooted.

 

The last reboot on cody was over 72 days ago.

The last reboot on johnny was over 84 days ago.

The last reboot on stevie was about 3.5 days ago because it crashed.

While installing Joomla through the cPanel and Softaculous I got an error a few times saying the connection was lost. I pulled up other pages not on Helio and they were ok. Not perfect though because I also had some issues on my end. My Internet connection is relatively slow so no I don't always blame slowness on Johnny . Getting disconnected during file transfers is a little different.

When Joomla did install, it went fast and I was happy. I did lose connection to the server several times while trying to navigate through Joomla (never lost Internet connection). I was still able to surf.

I'm not saying it's all the server. I like your service. I'm not complaining. I just wanted to know how much better the other server was. I knew when I signed up that I picked the more overloaded server and Im cool with that.

Oh, I also tried using WSftp and that would time-out if I sent more than a couple of small to medium sized files or sometimes even when I tried to send one file.

I know it is supposed to time out after a while of inactivity but I wasn't inactive and it should be able to connect right back again. Whenever WSftp had trouble I tried cPanel and it wouldn't load either. Then I would try the forums and they wouldn't load. I had a rough time of it. But its cool. I was just checking out my options.

I wasn't really complaining. I read all the messages warning that the server is working hard to serve everyone. I know you guys are only a few and have a lot of work to do. Just mentioning the symptoms I was having. - X

What do you mean by cannot stay connected? Is there a particular service you're having trouble connecting to, or do you just mean johnny is slow to load webpages from time to time?

 

At the moment stevie is approaching 7000 active accounts and johnny is a little over 1000 active accounts, but as you can see on the service monitor http://heliohost.grd.net.pl/monitor/ running processes like mono can make for rather spikey load.

Thanks! I try to go through the wiki and FAQ but I still miss some things. Sorry. I will have to think about switching. The first setup was fairly quick. It only took a day to get everything setup and running but I hate to have to wait another 24-48 hours. I know that's the way it is with most hosts because of scripts and DNS propagation and such. While I would agree that Facebook has only one "main" product (its really a bunch of products or features bundled together) they are still a giant as well at 100+ billion dollars in worth.

Facebook is IM, forum, chat, email, photo album, gaming, ad blasting, music streaming, video streaming, classifieds, directory and more each day all rolled into one.

Googles other products are minor in comparison to their search engine and although by themselves they cannot touch Google, Bing, Y!search, Unthink, Friendster, Four Square, MySpace and the likes all together can give Google A run for it's money.

The logic here is that google is a big giant with lots of money and nothing to lose. However, facebook is not a giant; they only provide one service, and they have a lot to lose. Google isn't dependent on Google+, but facebook is dependent on facebook, since that's the only service they provide.

 

On another note, facebook has been "stealing" google's money by not using adsense.

FreeBSD! Now that is some hard core SECURE stuff! They still don't use a GUI though do they? Yeah I would say command line would be a bit different from Windows. I remember sending IMs to a colleague that was using FreeBSD. I sent him several pictures without him making a comment until he finally told me he had a CLI AIM. Wow! Text only instant messaging. "Free copies" has been Microsoft's crack addiction for 20+ years. They give you a free copy of MS Word when you're in school and the millions of ignorant masses end up spending $300 for it a few years later because they never bother to learn anything else better. Microsoft has a lot in common with with a drug dealer, but if the drug dealer was hanging around your kid's elementary school handing out free crack samples you'd be a lot more pissed about it. Doesn't seem to be many folks from the LA area. SEO is all about the Internet. I don't see why it has to be pinned down to one area. The world is open to SEO.

I have loved the "idea" of Linux since the late 90's. It just never became mainstream like Windows. That's when Windows really sucked. Now its actually stable instead of having to reboot twice an hour.

Yeah Linux is great as an embedded OS in net appliances, GPS, phones, etc. but not on an open hard-drive where anybody can play with the Open Source code.

Linux was supposed to be the new OS for "gamers". That was me. Unreal Tournament, Quake (the first, 2nd and 3rd), Return to Castle Wolfenstein (I actually got that one to work on Mandrake). But getting GOOD games to work on Linux took hours if not days of compiling and recompiling. Partitioning, formatting, downloading. Ahhhh. Just throw the disc in a Windows box and start fragging!

Hacktivism has the allure of using hacking for a noble cause but there is nothing noble about the type of

hacking that is commonly referenced by the media. Hacktivism is the so called blend of hacking and

activism. The purported motivation and purpose of hacktivism is to support a political cause but in direct

opposition of true activism, hacktivism often negatively impacts or disrupts the political process as a

whole. The methods used by hacktivists are actually attacks to the electronic systems of anyone with an

opposing view. As mentioned, anyone is fair game but generally there are specific targets. Usually the

hackers go after websites with high visibility and large viewerships so to cause the most disruption.

These attacks are illegal and give an unfair advantage and sometimes unwanted advantage to one

political party or cause over another.

Quite often hacktivist are outsiders and not a part of the formal group in which they are supporting.

Therefore their support may not even be welcome. None of the formal groups involved may have

privately asked for or advocated an attack and as a result they will not return the favor of supporting the

hacktivists especially if they are caught in the act.

Introduce a naïve, honest or otherwise innocent person into the scenario and you often have a scapegoat

for the real perpetrators. This is a person who is drawn in by the activism side of the scheme. They want

to support what they feel is a good cause. Hacktivist are skilled at presenting what they would call a

solution to a legitimate problem that often plagues the masses. This solution may obscure or make light

The term hacker is used by the media because they feel and are probably correct that the common

reader or less technically minded reader cannot and will not discern it from the less favorable practice of

cracking. The terms are generally only used by those people who work in or with the Information

Technology (IT) or Information Systems (IS) industries in describing two unique practices. To the rest of

the world the terms are interchangeable.

Also, by a sort of natural selection, the public has accepted the word “hacker” over “cracker”. They have

gravitated to what is more comfortable for them to use in everyday conversation. This is similar to the

process by which slang words are sometimes accepted into formal languages.

The media gravitates as well not only to words they think the public would more likely use but to what

sounds more sensational. Cracker is not really a unique word. It often describes a type of bland food.

This may sound silly at first but the media is in the business of getting their message out to the masses

and using bland wording does not sell stories. The word “hacker” is unique to the electronics and

computer industries. You won’t hear a florist, doctor or even a lumber jack being described as a hacker

I have grown up believing that Christianity is the one true religion.

I have often wondered how similar the Koran and Holy Bible are.

I had a Book of Mormon once but threw it away. I wish I had checked it out more.

I do believe that Islamic extremists (there are Christian extremists too) are misinterpreting the Koran but I also think their must be some verbiage in it that is easily applied to both peaceful living and absolute living.

The first site is bare bones now and says "under construction".

The second site has good, meaningful content and gets a message across.

The third I really didn't stay on very long. It looked like a copy and paste script for a gamers blog. Those have been recycled since the 90's.

Would have been nice to have clickable links. Just a thought.

I'm not judging anyone or coming down on hacking. I have done a little hacking myself but I am a little concerned about so many threads on hacking with this being a professional hosting company. Should there be so many?

If I am currently on the Johnny server can I switch to Stevie? Yes I was warned about the uptime. I am NOT complaining. I am just thinking about switching. I wouldn't even mind if I lost everything I had on my site. Its not much yet. One reason is I cannot stay connected to the host long enough. I know you guys are gonna make it work though!

I often work through the middle of the night. This is also when most companies reboot their servers for scheduled maintenance. Do you guys reboot? When? How often?
