I am requesting a dedicated IP to enable the use of SSL on my website.

Would you like to use a self-signed certificate, or have you bought a certificate from an SSL certificate registrer such as VeriSign. Please remember that self-signed certificates will show a warning to users and are usually used for tests.

You can also get a certificate from startssl. They offer free certs.

Yeah - I noticed that before.

@Geoff - Do you know whether these actually provide real certificates which browsers will recognize with no catch?

Yes, the actually provide real certificates which browsers will recognize. However, there are a couple of catches:

1. You have to give them your personal information.

2. Their site has browser compatibility issues.

If you would like a free certificate (one without having any restrictions), then you will need to go with CACert. However, their certs are not trusted by browsers, so you will need to tell your clients to install the root cert.

I am going to try the StartSSL cert and see how that works out.
