lastrider Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Hi, Firstly I've just registered my HelioHost account, as I understand it won't be active for another 48 hours, which is cool. I've also gone and registered a 2 .co.uk domains via GoDaddy. The reason I've signed up for HelioHost is because I currently don't need a professional web host, in all honesty I don't even need a website as of this moment. What I'm really looking for is a personal email address with my domain for... well personal uses. As I understand the email part is offered by HelioHost which is great. However I just wish to enquire whether this is fine by HelioHost's TOS. Would I be allowed to use HelioHost primarily just for my email needs? Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, I did purchase 2 domains. I would ideally like one domain (domain#1) just for my email. However, when I get around to it, eventually one day I would like to set up a website on domain#2 also hosted at HelioHost. And when accessing domain#1 via browser (http) it will just redirect to my second domain (domain#2). I was wondering if this is all possible since I am quite new to hosting and have only really ever used CPanel once before. Thanks in advance for any helpful replies. Best Regards. Sorry for the double topic posting. I have no idea what happened there. I may have clicked submit twice. DOH! If a moderator or admin could kindly delete one of the topics, thanks! Sorry to be a nuisance.

Why not just get an account with an email service and then get a domain later? I believe aol allows yourname@yourdomain.com now, so purchasing a domain specifically for an email address was necessary. Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, I did purchase 2 domains. You can add a parked domain that will redirect to your first domain on your account. Btw, what you registered are not Top Level Domains. "co.uk" is a top level domain, "example.co.uk" is not. You should read the Support FAQ: http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=5055

Thanks for the reply, I'm only looking to use it as my personal email address so I won't be intending to break any of the TOSs. Unfortunately I didn't realise AOL offered such a service, though I may decide to use my current domain with it if possible. So thanks for pointing this out. This is possible. lastrider Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 A quick update and 2nd query. Just signed up to Google Apps for their email service. I've changed the MX records etc as need be for my purchased domain name, thus have Google Mail set up and working. Now my question is; with GoDaddy, to be able to change Total DNS settings (to set up CName and MX records required for Google Apps) you have to use the default NameServers of GoDaddy's parked domains. So would I be able to use HelioHost with my domain name? Since changing to the HelioHost NameServers will disable Total DNS settings on the GoDaddy domain manager and consequently disable Google Apps. Is there a way around this? So I may use both HelioHost for my web hosting needs and the Google Apps email service? Nearly forgot to mention my heliohost details. My username is mojahid and my domain name is mojahid.heliohost.org.

rvt Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Should work. Just create an A Record pointing to the IP address of your site here (and of course add it in your CPanel as a "parked" domain). Working on setting a demo up now to show you it works...will take at least 24 hours for my domain to get added here though.
Ashoat Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 You should be able to set the relevant records for Google Apps in your cPanel instead of with GoDaddy.
lastrider Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I was still waiting for my account to be activated, so I'm just getting ahead of myself here and asking these questions just to understand if it were plausible or not. Thanks again!
lastrider Posted May 28, 2010 Author Posted May 28, 2010 Just a quick update. I've changed the A records of one of my domains (mohammodali.co.uk) and am now seeing the heliohost account queued splash page. So that's working great, and as I need it to be, just waiting for it to go up now. Thanks. Best Regards.
lastrider Posted May 29, 2010 Author Posted May 29, 2010 Don't use A records. Use NS records. Is using A records a problem? It's not that I wouldn't mind changing to HelioHost's NS records, however then I would have to manage the DNS settings through the HelioHost CPanel for my Google Apps requirements. Where as ideally I would like to manage them through GoDaddy's Domain Management, especially since I have already set them up there. Further more I'm assuming switching to HelioHost's NS records would require me to wait until the account is added before I could use my Google App services again. Also would any possible down time on HelioHost not incapacitate my Email services?
Ashoat Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Hmmm... it's true that using our nameservers could endanger you if we go down. But on the other hand, using A records is not something that we support. My understanding is that they work, but then stuff like subdomains become impossible to configure. I'd say you can use A records, but at your own discretion. We won't be able to support DNS issues if you're using A records.
