Hello

As of about two weeks ago, the previous hosting service of my two other sites (besides csdb.heliohost.org) decided to delete my sites (one of which I was webmastering for another person) and my accounts, possibly due to account inactivity. As they they failed to warn me about this and they don't allow re-registering of the old domain names, I've decided I don't need their services any more.

However as I would like to keep those two sites up on the 'net I would like to ask if it's possible to host them with you since your service has been the most reliable one I've used so far (aside of the Tommy crash which wasn't due to your actions obviously).

The FAQ says there can be only one account per user but I'm not sure if it means there can also be just a single site. Looking at the account control panel, it appears there can be only one per account so it's probably the same thing in practice? I'm willing to sign up for multiple accounts but I'd rather not impersonate multiple people. I'm willing to donate funds to get the extra sites.

It is possible to host multiple sites using one account. You can use the 'Addon Domains' feature to point domains to particular sub-directories. You would then need to ensure that the domain(s) point to the name servers ns1.heliohost.org and ns2.heliohost.org.

No you needn't sign up for multiple accounts. HelioHost provides unlimited add-on domains, that means you can host as many number of websites on HelioHost as you wish. Just add them as add-ons.

Thanks! I'm usure however what I should do to manage the DNS in this case. If I use <something>.heliohost.org as the new subdomain, does it link to Heliohost DNS automatically? I didn't have paid-for domain names previously so the old domain names for the sites are lost anyway.

If you're talking about addon domains, a root admin has to add .heliohost.org subdomains for you. You need to make a post for that. Alternatively, you could change your main domain to something like newdomain.heliohost.org using the domain change script.

It is not possible to add another .heliohost.org sub-domain yourself, however, an admin can do this if you request it as flazepe mentioned. Otherwise, you can set-up your own domains as an add-on and set the name servers.

If someone is thinking about keeping websites online for a really really long term, then always should choose the option to register own top level domain name, which is independent of any webhosting, registrar or any other company.

This way if anything will goes wrong with the webhost - we can move on to another one without changing the address, keep all the visitors and position in the web. If the webhost won't be enough one day and dedicated server will be needed, no problem. Even if the domain registrar will bankrupt, we can change the registrar and keep the domain. At least one own domain for ~10$ a year (to have multiple websites under subdomains of it).

At the very early stage of my "webmaster adventure" I was using free subdomains from the webhosts. Very quickly, after ~2 years I've regret that, when moving between the webhosts I've had to inform all users about the address change. I've moved to free subdomains from the services other than webhosts, which can be pointed to any webhost. That was better solution but again, after ~4-5 years even well known services with good opinions started to disappear. The only one I still know and can be the last resort is freedns.afraid.org (not to mention .tk/.ml/.ga/.cf/.gq domains, which I do NOT recommend at all), all the other that had tens of thousands customers and years of history doesn't exist anymore. So finally one day I've decided to pay for the domain name, at least I know that no matter what will be in next 10 or 20 years with any webhost or registrar, my websites will be still under the same addresses (and I can keep the same email addresses) as long as I'll pay for the domain and have the backup copy of files and databases.

Unless someone doesn't look further than few years ahead, or see no problem in changing the address every few years, then free subdomains from the webhosts are fine.
