What are doorway pages?

I've always known these as those pages that just have a large picture/message front and center and a "click to enter" button. This design is something that shouldn't be used in most cases because they cause an inconvenience to users (extra click and page load to get to the actual site).

 

Also, they should not be confused with a landing, which is often a fully-featured page meant to receive visitors and display specific content (e.g. a special promotion)
