I Would Like To Express My Gratitude.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the kind services and the hosting that was provisioned. Unfortunately, I need more and bigger and have had to put my stuff elsewhere in order to meet those needs. I could have stayed here and kept the resources pegged the limit and utilized the maximum allowable resources. That would have been unfair of me and would have negatively impacted others on what is, essentially, a shared space.

Rather than continue to have space provisioned for me, space allotted on my behalf, things that I will not be using... I'd like to indicate that it's quite acceptable, even preferable, that my account be deleted and the space made available for someone who will make better use of it than I.

I'd also like to make it VERY clear that this is not, by any means, intended to be a slight nor is it a complaint about the services offered or provisioned. In fact, you have made it abundantly clear what I could expect and I received everything that I was expecting. I have absolutely no complaints about the service as offered or provisioned. I have no complaints about the people, the community, or anything at all.

In fact, I found the service speedy. I found the sign-up process unique but effective and efficient. I found the services to be provisioned as anticipated and with no surprises. I literally have absolutely zero complaints about the service. I have every reason to be grateful and as appreciative as I was on the first day. I enjoyed the short time I spent here and I'd like to part on terms as nice and as welcoming as they were when I came. I'd also like to not have to have someone come along and delete my account for inactivity or things like that. There's no reason for space to be allocated when there will be nobody making use of it. There's no reason why I should not have my account deleted and provided to someone who will actually use it as expected and to its maximum appreciation.

So, feel free to delete the account. This is obviously really me. I use a complex password and my IP address should clearly indicate that I'm on Fairpoint (I just double-checked and I am not using the VPN right now!) so this is not a hoax. I'd log in and request the account be deleted (if I knew how) but I've had issues logging in and had the service frozen and had to get it unlocked. I'd rather not add any complexity to the situation. I guess you could contact me by email to confirm it but, really, that is not necessary. You can look in your logs and see that I've not logged in recently. You can look to see that nobody should have hit the site recently. You can look and (I believe) see that the DNS is no longer the same and no longer points to this site.

I dislike wasting resources, especially those given free and in good faith, and I realize that this is an unlikely message to receive. (How many people request their account be deleted, after all?) But, as I said, the space and resources are much better served by being freed up for another user. I believe that, with a certain level of inactivity, sites are automatically deleted? I guess you could wait for that if you don't believe me. However, I've a rather unique style of posting (verbose and inarticulate) so it's pretty obvious that it's really me. Besides, who else *but* me would take the time to request that the account be deleted in order to make room for someone to better use the resources? ;-)

I really do appreciate it. I really do not need this particular space. I really do think it belongs being used by someone else. I really am grateful for the kind offer and the short time that I did use the space. Thank you. If there is a magic delete button then I can *try* to log in and not break something - and I'll happily delete it there. In fact, I'll *try* to do so. I'll try to login once and then, if it doesn't work, I'll hit the magic button to send me the password and I'll look inside the control panel for that option. I do want to make it abundantly clear that this is not because of some perceived failing on your end, some level of dissatisfaction, or anything like that. I'm really quite pleased. I just don't really need the space or service and I'm sure there are surely much better stewards of the space/resources than I.

Well, as you can probably see with your logs, I just logged in and looked for a method to remove my account. I found none. (I remembered the password, by the way.) If you need some additional verification, you can check the default index.html for the confirmation. The DNS no longer resolves to this hosting company so you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way, if you want. Still, the space really would be better used by someone else. I don't want to negatively impact the server and I'm actually not using that domain name at the moment and won't be for a while.

I'd rather leave on good terms (and maybe come back some day if I need/want to) than to leave with you thinking that I just bailed with no intentions to return or that I was ungrateful. Or, worse, thinking that I'm abusive.

Thanks again.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your time here and that the services met your expectation while you were using them :) We're sorry to see you go.

There's no need to worry about abandoning your account. Hundreds of them are removed for abandonment every day, and likewise hundreds more sign up to replace them. We take no offense to it, it's part of doing business, and it costs us nothing since the server does it on its own. As newcomers signs up, the accounts that have been abandoned or suspended longest get tossed to make room for the new users. As for deleting your account, you delete it by filling out the form here: www.heliohost.org/home/support/scripts/delete

You're always welcome back at any point in the future. :) Also, please recommend us to your friends. Even though your site may not be small enough to run on our servers, many websites will.

Thank you very much. I've gone ahead and hit the button and told it to delete me. ;-) I figure that there's a chance that I'll want to return sometime and that it's best to part company on good terms. After all, I had great services rendered and was given exactly (actually more) than I had needed, in some regards.

The thing is, my site probably *would* run on it. It would just run slowly. It would also ping off the rev limited constantly. It's surprising how much resources WordPress and a forum will take if you get a few concurrent users. I come 'prepared' with quite a few people who know me so it escalated quickly. (I don't use much in the way of social media sites, but I do know a whole bunch of people from across the 'net and am a prolific poster at a few sites. Slashdot is one such example.)

But, if you get WordPress and a forum going, make a few changes to the back-end (actually making it a bit lighter) and then end up with a whole stack of the plugins that need to be installed to keep it secure and offer some decent functionality and it eats a whole lot of resources. Serious amounts of resources.

I suspect the site would run here. I suspect that it would have some 500 errors here and there. The thing is, it would be really using all the RAM assigned to it, constantly. Sure, the RAM is assigned to it but it's really probably not expected that that full allocated amount will be in constant use. There's also the overhead of it hitting that limit and having to either throttle or kill processes (I'm not sure what the manager does for that - I've never looked into it) and I feel it would be unfair of me to do that to other people.

It wasn't too difficult to find an alternative and that meant making some trade-offs but I'm comfortable with that. I'll actually have to do the proverbial singing for my supper. That's okay. I've wrestled a few servers in my day, down on the server farm, and this will give me the chance to learn some new things. In exchange, I'll get ample hosting. I did mention Slashdot... It turns out, I've got friends in low places. And there aren't many places lower than deep in the bowels of a data center. ;-)

It's not like it will be difficult work. A few support questions, some button pushing, and that sort of thing. I'm reasonably fluent so should pick it up quickly. I don't even have to wear pants! Then, I've got a couple of other options that don't actually require doing much of anything but I might as well take the option that helps keep me busy, is giving back, and teaches me something. Yes? Yes. Even if it just sounds good, I might as well go for it. I've managed many servers. I've just not really managed many servers meant for web hosting. I guess it's going to be a bit different but I'm okay with that. Much of it is point and click sometimes, I might need to spin up a VM and get a new instance going and provision new space.

I'm reasonably security minded. I've been using Unix or Linux since the 1980s. Linux didn't come out until 1991, I was a Sun guy back in the day. Back when you could kill a man with a keyboard and your screen had two colors, green and black, and you liked it. Well, if you were really fancy you might have auburn or you might even have a very, very fancy monitor and be able to select green or amber! Woohoo! What exciting times those were.

So, yeah, I think I'll be fine. I'll be doing a bunch of shuffling over the weekend.

But anyhow, yes... I'll still recommend folks consider your services. I'll even suggest that they might be able to stick around and upgrade their services as time progresses. They may not have as much dynamic content. I'll still favorably mention you and honestly tell them that I've used your services and found them to be as advertised. Thanks for the help and enjoy your day.
