AverageJoe Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 O.K I pretty much know most of html now, so I'm looking to expand my horizon. What language do you need to know to make a forum or something where people can post on my site? Is the language all you need to know? Thanks, Joe
Kyougi Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Any dynamic language will do. PHP is the popular choice.
lappy512 Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 If you just want to make a forum, you don't have to learn PHP; there are some premade scripts that you can find. Some popular ones include: Invision Power Board, vBulletin, PHPBB, and SMF. (The latter two are free) By the way, your signature is a bit too long.
AverageJoe Posted March 11, 2007 Author Posted March 11, 2007 Do I need multiple web pages to make a forum? How can I go about doing this for free? Thanks P.S. how can i make my signature shorter with out changing it??
Kyougi Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 You need to upload it to a PHP-enabled webserver like ours and read and follow the directions in the 'INSTALL' file.
AverageJoe Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Do you think this is a good one or should I go with phbb or something loke that?
1337 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Drupal is a good CMS, but it's more than a forum. If you just want a forum, go with phpBB. Also, if you use Heliohost, you can install an instant phpBB/SMF/Drupal/etc in the Fantastico section of your control panel.
AverageJoe Posted March 31, 2007 Author Posted March 31, 2007 I just got smf I must say it is the best yet!
RelaxRelapse Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Ya SMF for a free forum, and IPB for a paid forum
Quantum Media LLC Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Well just wanted to let everyone know, with my help...hehehe a little of it, Joe now has his forum up and live at http://www.awsomejoe23.com domain name courtesy of Helionet
kalamarko92 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 www.editboard.com provides a nice php forum on its subdomain (you can choose from 7 of them, isn't that nice of they?!), 1 per mail address. kalamarko92
kalamarko92 Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 and IPB for a paid forum www.ipbfree.com A FREE INVISION POWERBOARD!!!!!!!!! kalamarko92
Kyougi Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 and IPB for a paid forum www.ipbfree.com A FREE INVISION POWERBOARD!!!!!!!!! kalamarko92 IPBFree uses an outdated version of IPB and has ads.
1337 Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Might want to clarify on IPB: All "free" IPB hosts use an old version of IPB (1.3). While it does have some decent features, it is insecure and you might get hacked (unless the provider self-patched all the holes)
