myscrnnm Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 The two biggest microchip companies in the world are currently Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices. But which one makes the best CPUs?
lappy512 Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 You forgot about SUN SPARC, which is used in servers, and Motorolla, which makes the processors for Apples
myscrnnm Posted February 8, 2005 Author Posted February 8, 2005 Actually, new Apple computers ues PowerPC processors made by International Business Machines. Like, I am pretty certain that the G5 processors used in the PowerMac G5 and the iMac G5 are made by International Business Machines. New International Business Machines servers also use PowerPC processors. Motorola usually makes processors for mobile phones and handhelds now. And most servers (small business and enterprise) actually use the Intel Xeon and Intel Itanium II processors now. They are favoured for their 64-bit capabilities and reliability.
esky Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 I am using AMD 2500+ processor. So I have voted for AMD, but why i am the only man that have voted ?
lappy512 Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 i just don't really have a preference. Both are good, although i like the HT features of Pentiums right now. but 64-bit AMD's are good, although the 6xx series of P4's that support 64-bit might be great too.
Ashoat Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 yeh, i like 64-bit, but HT is cool too. and i belive xeon offer 64-bit... and i dont think the 6xx series of p4 offers 64-bit. maybe ur thinking the other socket, the one that starts with a 7... lol. maybe im wrong, im not so researched in this topic.
lappy512 Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/0...tid=126&tid=218 take a look
myscrnnm Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 I favour Intel for consumer purposes. Like the Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology, and the Pentium M processor with Centrino Mobile Technology. But of all the CPU making companies, my favourite would have to be IBM. I mean, what with their PowerPC G5 processors.
nilayz Posted April 2, 2005 Posted April 2, 2005 I would go for Intel. I have used PI, PIII and am currently using PIV. PIV is a bit noisy... but then its really fast!!!
lappy512 Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 yes, HT is very useful. i actually have a Gigabyte cooler for my pentium, it's really great and quiet. you can make it very noisy though, and then it has the power of your heating vent, that much power.
nilayz Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Gigabyte??? I hope you don't have Gigabyte's mobo... one of my friend had to throw away his gigabyte mobo within a year of buying it... he just couldn't get it to work !!!!!! The actual noise comes from the 3 powerful fans at the back of the cabinette.
lappy512 Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 ah, i have a 120mm fan at the back, which is very big and quiet. my gigabyte fan, when reved up to 4000rpm, is noisy. but the amount of air flowing out of it is comparable to a heating vent in a house. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/gigabyte_3d_cooler_pro/
GameClaw_268 Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I have a Pentium, but I hear AMD is really good. I'm not voting cause I'm not sure.
PhoenixFlame512 Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 I have a Pentium, but I hear AMD is really good. I'm not voting cause I'm not sure. I use a Pentium 4. And I voted Intel because their CPUs are fast and reliable (when compared with AMD). AMD is good if you're on a budget. But if you want great value and a fast processor, the Intel CPUs are teh CPUs for you.
