ADDS on a virtual machine

Hello all,

I am launching a new server running Windows Server 2008 R2. My plan is to have one host maching and one or more virtual machines. One of the services I will be running is Active Directory. Should I install this service on the host machine or on a virtual machine? Thanks!

You should install it on the host machine, because it is centralized, and your virtual machines would not work without it anyways. I have no clue why you are choosing microsoft, when there are so many good linux distros that would have less security holes and don't waste any money. If you're willing to reconsider, I would recommend at least trying out FreeBSD (Microsoft uses it for their Hotmail servers); if nothing else, you'll learn something new.

Thanks for the reply! I'd love to try FreeBSD, but does it act the same as Windows Server? I'm only using Microsoft because I have a free copy I got. Perhaps I could try FreeBSD on a virtual machine.

"Free copies" has been Microsoft's crack addiction for 20+ years. They give you a free copy of MS Word when you're in school and the millions of ignorant masses end up spending $300 for it a few years later because they never bother to learn anything else better. Microsoft has a lot in common with with a drug dealer, but if the drug dealer was hanging around your kid's elementary school handing out free crack samples you'd be a lot more pissed about it. Same thing though in my opinion. Hook 'em young just like the cigarette companies do.

Microsoft isn't completely horrible, it just costs a lot and there are plenty of free alternatives. I only use Microsoft because I have access to free software and the only reason I don't use Linux is because anything beyond the basic web browsing requires a bunch of code to do. Some people might say I'm spoiled, but I think it could be made a little easier to install and run programs.

FreeBSD! Now that is some hard core SECURE stuff! They still don't use a GUI though do they? Yeah I would say command line would be a bit different from Windows. I remember sending IMs to a colleague that was using FreeBSD. I sent him several pictures without him making a comment until he finally told me he had a CLI AIM. Wow! Text only instant messaging. Awesome.

 

But Office helps kids get an education and if they grow up knowing MS they can easily get certified and staff on the free stuff forever. Microsoft Downloads.

Dear xaav and Krydos,

I owe both of you a sincere apology for my behavior in this topic and my comments in my 3rd post. I am now running a test Ubuntu machine (completely from terminal too!) and I have been much happier than with Microsoft and its IIS server. If you two hadn't tried to convince me to switch to Linux, I would have been unhappily stuck with Microsoft. I hope you will be able to accept my apology and forgive my mistake I have made.

 

P.S. I plan on launching many more Linux machines in the near future!
