Some colos have support people that do a range a services depending on the colo and the amount you pay. Some flip switches for you, some will actually log into your server and start services and do basic troubleshooting.

I suppose that djbob created Heliohost in order to learn how to do all that himself, how to run a paid webhost.

Quantity of twitter users is much less than email users. If you use twitter, don't assume that everybody else does too.

Do any of these services allow me to prevent my email from being publicly available?

groups.yahoo.com does allow to switch a group to allow members (including owners and moderators) to hide their email addresses. The switch to allow is irreversible and disables the poll feature (no big deal). On an announcement group (only moderators can post) it's harmless. I'd not recommend to allow members to hide email addresses on a discussion mailing list (where members can post) because that hides also member's IP-address, from moderators too, making tracking trolls impossible. If a member or moderator chose to hide his email address, the only way to post a message is from groups.yahoo.com website.

Freebsd doesn't have any driver support for my NIC

May be 7.0 has. Possibly using Windows driver under FreeBSD. What card?

 

I use FreeBSD on my workstation (it's not desktop, it's bedside ).

Also, I made a web-kiosk (a computer running a web-browser only) for my mother using FreeBSD (and Firefox). No M$ in this home.

The script goes through all accounts and prunes inactive ones. It judges accounts inactive if their control panel has not been touched for three months.

I look at stats (disk space usage, monthly bandwidth transfer) on the root cPanel page monthly. But I got the same letter, and when clicked the link in the letter also was told "your username could not be found in the list of accounts suspended for being inactive". After that I went to cPanel one more time.

(I never changed cPanel skin), language English. Each time I visit cPlanel it asks for basic authentication (username, password), it's normal.

FTP daemon died again.

I confirm the problem:

 

$ ftp 64.235.55.112
ftp: connect: Connection refused

 

FTP daemon is not running: `ps axww` command doesn't show a FTP server. On another hosting with cPanel that command shows "pure-ftpd".
