Sorry, for eating-up the better part of the page with this post, but since the issue is apparently affecting everybody else, I decided to make it public right here, rather than via some obfuscating PM. From what I have found in your httpd.conf, most things are set-up like this: *snip* However, the next entry is owned by root, rather than djbob *snip* And from here on, what follows is, no more include, and strip the owner. *snip* Your httpd.conf is some 19 odd MB's, at least the copy, from which I have taken the above info. There are 6.286 entries in trueuserowners, all djbob. I wonder, how you can have all these users, if your /home partition is a mere 264.87 GB. Dividing that by 500 MB per user would result in a maximum of 542 users. 542 * 500 = 271000 / 1024 = 264.6484375 GB or rounded to 264.65 GB. Well, then again, maybe we do the numbers different in the UK, or probably my whole formulae is wrong. You'd be needing some decent TB's, rather then GB's to match your total number of users. ips arrived with 1908 bytes, and 44 entries, which seems more closer to reality, then trueuserowners with 92.011 bytes and the aforementioned 6.286 entries, or userdomains with 550.995 bytes and 18.481 entries, including nobody. Most of which I bothered to check seem to be dead long, some appear to be still alive. However, none hosted on heliohost. Well, I only checked a few. cpanel.config arrived with 4.522 bytes php.ini measured 45.155 bytes pure-ftpd.conf carries 10.517 bytes You have approximately 9.230 services running, and some interesting passwd variants, ranging from 425.000 bytes to a little over 8 MB. There are some 10 shells configured, and 15 entries in fstab, mostly ext3, except for /home and /home1, both on ext2. I didn't know, anyone was still using them. So I spent some time snooping around a little more, but I guess, you wouldn't quite like me, to publish your whole server in public, would you? Might be funny, to watch performance, if I was to post the URL. Relax, at least some parts of the layout resist mere knocking on the door. I wouldn't be too sure, however, about what might happen, if one of those cyber-kids went by, to use a can-opener with just slightly more force. You may have managed to get that thing running - somehow - but you are miles off-course in terms of configuration. My advice would be, to shut off the box for some proper maintenance, clean it up, and then come back. I am most positive, that the majority of users would appreciate a scheduled down-time in favour of unpredictable, what-the-hack-is-going-on. Regards, Peter Heinrich Claus

Hi. As to reply to an earlier remark, whether I had an idea, how to fix it: I believe to be a simple /user/ on this machine. Fixing an apparent server problem ought to be the task of whoever is running it. Next, I'd probably have an idea, indeed; if it was my machine, and it'd be /me/, running it. Not posting, because of not knowing doesn't really help any. I would suppose, someone has done a tremendous job, screwing up either WHM, CP, or some vital parts of the server's main conf. Permissions ought to be out of the questions, since invalid permissions don' t clear existing records; at least not on any of the machines I know; unless, of course, you have some sort of /visible for admin only/ in place. More likely, I would look into path settings. Wherever you have it sitting, go there, and make sure the records are pointing to the corresponding user's account. I am fairly sure, the whole issue; once it has been solved; will turn out as trivia. You may also want to check your settings with LaFrance. You never know, but funny things tend to happen, when, and where, you least expect them. Well, that is just about as far, as my free services go. Good luck everyone.

Sorry, I really don't mean to bug around. Just curious before switching over to a brief week-end time-out. What ever happened to our dear voluntary /admins/? Haven't read any of you lately. 2 days ago, djbob was asking, whether the issue had been solved. Well, that was probably a bit too much to hope for, was it? Instead, more posts, joining the club. C'mon guys, it's not even Latin, it's only a server. See you around Monday. Good luck.

Well then, apparently there is more trouble elsewhere. My last posts were re-directed to http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=10694, which by now seems to be invalid. The readings on CP are still all zero-ed. I wonder, if my last post has actually arrived somewhere. Just in case, this one makes it through the void, I would prefer some feedback, as to what's going on. Thanks.

Run a query on phc (stevie), that should get you there. If you can't make it to where the domains are supposed to be, well sorry then. Fast reply went here http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?sh...amp;#entry72622 Don't know, if this will do the same. Anyway, over there, I can see, this is a server issue, since there a more topics. OK, it all arrives here. I shall delete the other bookmark, and focus on this thread instead, thanks.

Well then, at least it seems, I've been ringing the right pair of buzzers; and my over-all picture, of what's cooking under the stove was fairly correct. So if everybody is done with euphoria: can we then come back to the topic, which still is: What gives with my add-on domains? Oh, sorry, scratch that. It ought to read: What gives with everybody's add-on domains, sub-domains, etc... Apparently there is at least 1 or 2 having the same issue. As mentioned earlier, I am moving domains out, so I wouldn't know, which of those originally configured here would be affected. There is currently only one, still active on this thing; for the mo, that is. Quite frankly, any such info ought to be plain visible in your admin panel. Just head over to my account, and fetch the required data. Volunteers: I didn't mean to down-grade whatever your job implies. Sorry, if the wording has caused some confusion about that. Rest assured, that I am in complete favour of voluntary aids. Used to, and still do, some of that myself - left alone on a different level. I perfectly well understand, you guys are not in the easiest of positions, hence, accept my apologies. Business on The Internet is not half as funny, as it used to be. Now then, due to my lack of understanding. I presume (what do you expect from a bloke, with over 30 years in computing); I shall leave you alone for a while. Fetch a cuppa and relax. It's not the end of the world. Wishing you the best of luck in finding a pleasant and suitable solution for the sake of those, sharing the same topic. Regards.

Well, it seems, I am not the only one in this particular dingy. Nice to meet you. To meet you, nice. However, to come back to the topic, reading through the posts, I couldn't really find any solutions, not so nice. For example, what exactly id the deeper sense, in having a pull-down stuffed-up with dummy entries? True, at least some of the domains are still resolving, for the time being, until the next flush of the DNS cache. Once that has happened, the only thing, any of those domains are resolving to, is Nirvana. Since these forums appear to be stock-piled with Admins, I wonder, if any of these actually has the required experience, to give a concrete reply; rather then the bubbles-up earlier on in the topic. Whichever topic has a slightly more delicate weighting, seems to be calling for some djbob. In other words, what are the other /Admins/ doing here, anyway, apart from joining in to give it a good shout for the Admin's Overlord? Sorry, nothing personal, no offenses intended, but where I come from, one has to pass some fancy exams before being allowed to postulate as Admin. I shall hope, whoever is in charge of this merry-go-round, has fundamental expertise enough, to apply the necessary actions asap. Frankly, I am in no particular mood for any more /funny games/. Those domains actually /do/ have a reason. Well knowingly, that this is a (one-of-many) freebie, I would still expect things to work. Looking forward, to read better stuff next visit 'round, -tia-

Hello. Since one of my add-on domains was behaving sort of strange lately, I went to CP, to check. Oops, while FTP and Mail accounts, as well, as file-structures, are still there, _ALL_ of my add-on domains have vanished. CP give a ZERO count. Funny thing is, at least one of these domains is (still) resolving nicely. (Moved out most of them anyway) If you could take a look into the matter; and if it helps, the domain is http://www.alphabox.uk.tc - thank you.

The Creator had a master-tape - God? Never met the fellow, but some swear. Isn't it, as in The meaning of life: 42? Life is, what you make of it, thus, God is, what you believe, it is. Call it Allah, Jesus, Buddha, whatever - just don't bite off my Holy Banana. Gosh, all this stuff is so bloody ridiculous. Did any of you folks ever actually read the Bible, Coran, or any book at all for that matter? If you care for Philosophy, try Kant, Rousseau, or Horace, to get a head-start. You may want to switch over to Nitzsche for a more cynical point of view. Oops, did I just spill some Latin into your face? omnibus ex nihilo ducendis sufficit unum.

Regarding the blank page: any Browser should accordingly punish invalid mark-up, by stop rendering at all, just like Firefox does with invalid X(HT)ML. Maybe that way, there would be at least fewer trashy sites out there. Any site, with an; either accidental, or on purpose; potential to crash a user's system, is off the list; once and for good - at least off mine. At times, I really would like to see some sort of license, required to publish to the world - just like in the classic print-media. These days there can be absolutely no excuse whatsoever, for not having tested whatever contents locally first; prior to push them on-line. Get a copy of LAMP, WAMP, XAMPP; or whichever suits you best, and do your bloody home-work.

To begin with, you don't have any default index page. The site comes up with a generic index of listing by Apache. I have tried twice to enter your CMS. Some sort of default is half-way loading, then completely freezing my system - on both occasions. Full reset required. Sorry, what was the problem?

Permit me, to invite one or two of you over to a project I am in the process of getting up at http://www.freeunited.uk.tc This is all about Google's trail of horrors. I would like the site to catch-up some activity, since for the time being, I am pretty much self-entertaining myself, thank you.
-
Unfortunately - once again - I am wasting time, waiting for DNS propagation to complete, but in the meanwhile, if you care to enter clics.uk.tc into your Google box, it comes up alright, just like a bunch of others. Obviously this means, they are not blocked. The one thing, I don't quite like about smartdots.com - the XX.tc registrar, is, that they have a large blacklist of DNS servers. So, if you are happy with your host, that doesn't mean, you can use it, to host your domain, simply because the DNS servers are black-listed. Anyway, as I have stated on www.freeunited.uk.tc, Google has declared war upon the free world. Any help to get the site alive would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Oh, and one more thing, those lists, regarding free hosts, are usually hopelessly out-dated, hence, no use at all. It has always been, and will always remain, a pain in the - you know where - to do your homework, searching, trying, errror-ing, etc. Eventually, one will find a useful combination - if just to last for a while. In the end, more and more people are moving over to the classic, reliable paid hosting track. I am in the process myself. It's just not making any sense, to have your sites, coming up, and going down every now and then.
-
IMHO, any CMS, free or paid, is a plain pain in the lower rear. Hardly any of them produces validating sources, depending the DTD fed to them. Hence, I would go as far, as to say, CMS are for dummies, who don't even know how to spell mark-up. But that's just my personal opinion.

Just as I said. Fancy or not, the WHM is not part of the original Apache package, hence, at the very least we should call it a modification. I have my own fair share of WHM history. Thus, we can settle the topic. It appears, the original thread starter is sitting back, wondering, just what the hack we are splashing out. Lets take it from here, and call it a day.

Which applies only, if any such is explicitly configured. Try setting up Apache, using the defaults. Create a host entry in the hosts file. Now, if Apache is running; and directory listing is turned on; the default page is index of - End of communication. Take Apache down, return to the host, and the only thing you get is Server not found End of communication. Don't try fancy stuff - at least not with Apache. Chances are, it's creating conflicts with individual users settings. Any such is the cause of all evil in web-hosting. What seems to be working just nicely on your own little dev-box not necessarily leads to the same results in the real world. Nothing personal, but some of you probably just have too much time between High School classes, so keep going; happy bug-hunting. EOF

Whatever gimmicks you may have configured to handle HTTP request, is one thing. However, any such is must be configured as bending the rules, aka standards. Thus, we both share the point. A stand-alone machine, on its own, dedicated IP returns blank if down, while anything on a shared IP may well return foo - depending the server's admin's tweaks. However, none of this is really helping the poor guy to solve his screwed .htaccess - or server, or whatever. And, as I have posted above, the screenshot is proof enough, that there is something utterly wrong with the configuration. Either the somewhat exotic interpretation of an .htaccess, or else I would place a bet on some sort of server-side mismatch. At least in the UK we have a saying, something about too many cooks do spoil the soup...

Well, wherever you moved your sitemap, if it is not in the root, there ought to pop-up a proper 404. Instead, I get your page alright, without any styles, though. Refer to the attached screenshot. Somebody mentioned, the 404 may be caused by the server being down. ??Which planet do you live on?? If a server is down, it doesn't send anything. The only visible output in any such case, is a Server not found message in your Browser window. I agree to the syntax error in the .htaccess, regarding Deny from all. This is used for high-security areas, where first you block the whole world, and then add a filter, to allow only the IP's, you want to grant access; to whatever contents are there. Did it ever occur to you, to temporarily disable that odd .htaccess - if just for testing, to see, what happens without it? Just rename it to something like .htaccess-- to prevent the server from parsing it. Then, create a fresh copy, adding one piece at a time. As soon, as you run into troubles, at least you can pin-point them exactly. Take it from there, to address the issue in question. Another thing is, that Google really doesn't care where your sitemap lives on the server, as long, as its syntax is correct. Regards, Peter Heinrich Claus

Delete your robots.txt - it's invalid. There is no allow directive because that is the desired default behaviour - to allow access. Depending, which tool, you use, to create your sitemap, the format may well be invalid. Google is a little picky about this one. Supposing you are on some sort of Win, try the free Xenu Link Sleuth. It also verifies your links and outputs other useful information. If asked, if you want a report, click YES, than CANCEL on the FTP form, to load the report in your default Browser. I keep a link on my site at http://www.peterheinrichclaus.uk.tc/resources/#Xenu Well, okay, I should have known. You are using XML Sitemaps 1.6. Whatever it was, either htaccess or the malformed robots.txt - it appears, you have it fixed. At least, when I click the root link from the sitemap, some UFO Blog opens. You seem to like bizarre relations, don't you? What exactly is the connection between UFO's, Vikings, The UK, and whatever else unrelated stuff you place there. Oh, and consider using at least some margin and padding. It really helps. Regards, Peter Heinrich Claus

How can there be /too many/ free domains? Compared to the list of commercial domains; whichever free listing you come up with; must surely be minute. It should be the individual's choice, which service to pick. The Internet is a world of strict, and ruthless competition, zero tolerance. If you were to provide anything _but_ quality, you'd soon enough find yourself tripping over the edge. Another thing: Personally, I don't consider URL forwarding a proper domain. Unless you have DNS, you could just as well do with any of the free URL shortening services - why bother for a /domain/ - if it's not?

co.cc can no longer be googled
claus replied to digitalwolf's topic in Website Management and Coding
Don't get carried away, by what's obvious. I hold some 250+ domains, about 30 co.cc. Log in to your Google Webmasters account, select the site, and file a request for review. Just so, to give you something to play with, try http://www.peter-heinrich-claus.co.cc - taking you to the not so obvious http://www.peterheinrichclaus.uk.tc I guess, if the first would not be working, the second never would load, don't you agree? If you are still in doubt, enter peter-heinrich-claus.co.cc into your Google box. If it was blocked, how comes, there are /About 419,000/ results? Simply pretending to be a webmaster just isn't good enough. One ought to have done his, her homework before. Regards, Peter Heinrich Claus -
co.cc can no longer be googled
claus replied to digitalwolf's topic in Website Management and Coding
Everyone using .co.cc can request a re-view of the site by the Google staff. It takes a while, but if they find your site OK, it will re-appear in the search results. I have done this with quite a few sites, and it works. I am in the process of setting up a related site at http://www.freeunited.uk.tc - BTW: The same applies to cz.cc; and apparently the whole *whatever*.cc branch altogether. Regards, Peter Heinrich Claus -
I must be either some sort of fossil, or the sole surviving user of Solaris. Er, make that Sun Solaris; because the new release by Oracle is pretty much yet another Linux Gnome. I just love the JDE. However, you'll need a full install. The LIVE from Oracle is so bloody crippled, it's no use at all. Apart from that, I'd go with FreeBSD, or NetBSD to do some serious working. Win7 mainly for compat reasons only. Appears to be closing in on on the *nix path, like Mac did before; by switching to the FreeBSD Kernel. The SUA gives you a nice little UNIX env to play with. Well, I'm not surprised. UNIX is simply the best, you can get; if you are into working, rather than wasting time with fancy /shooters/...
