Making Rails Easier

Hey, I'm a beginning RoR coder and was wondering what others here use to make development on Heliohost easier. Right now I'm not sure exactly how to go about developing my site, meaning I don't know what to use to make the file transfer easier.

 

Do you just have a local folder with all your Rails apps in it, then copy the whole thing back over to the server once you make changes? Any advice would be really appreciated.
