What are the major issues?

Hey everyone,

Since I've been gone so long, I've probably missed some major problems we've been having. I'm not exactly sure as to what they are, so I'm posting this thread so that everyone can post MAJOR concerns. To be considered major, there have to be at least two people with the same problem. I'll address these issues as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

djbob

My issue revolves around co.cc domains.

others (just one or two) can view my website using the co.cc domain i use but I can't. what's the deal?

thing is, I have another host. That host also uses one of my domains from co.cc but the domain there works for everyone and for me.

with heliohost however, only one or two (confirmed) were able to view my site and as stated earlier: I can't.

Is it the co.cc services or is it heliohost fault?

Confirmed. This is a HelioHost's issue. I'm not an expert in dns, but it seems that some isp's servers need error-free dns servers. There is a topic about the co.cc problems. Here are some more topics about co.cc/dns problems:

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4065

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4070

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4026

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4036

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4056

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4060

2. This is maybe the reason for the co.cc problems: There are some dns-errors with heliohost.org (and wit helionet.org).

See http://www.intodns.com/heliohost.org and http://www.robtex.com/dns/heliohost.org.html

My isp's proxy server gives this error message when I try to access my website. Without the proxy server I got Firefox's errror message saying "Server not found".

504 Gateway Timeout

The following error occurred:

A DNS lookup error occurred because the request timed out during the lookup.

Date: Tue, 07 Apr 2009 12:58:32 GMT

Appliance: netapp4

3. The server is running out of disk space (copied from the cPanel's server status):

Disk /dev/sda1 (/) 81 %

Disk /dev/sda3 (/usr) 100 %

4. There are some [topic=4092]e-mail[/topic] problems. Posible reason: there are no MX A records for heliohost.org

A To-Do list

File Management

1. Core files. Everytime the server crashes, core files are dumped into folders with php files.

that has caused my account to go way over the file limit.

2. HD. Disk /dev/sda3 (/usr) has used up 92 %.

Missing Functions

3. Sendmail. Mail sent out to accounts that my file manager is full is blank. Only by opening the header did i notice this was sent from Stevie.

4. ASPX files don't work.

5. Cron have wrong permissions http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4142

Server

5. Instability. The server has less than 60% uptime. (This two weeks were <87%)

6. Heliohost.org doesn't resolve in some countries. (Russia, some states in US. Need a list?)

7. Forum is in a mess.

8. Phishing. Heliohost has become a phishing host.

http://www.helionet.org/index/index.php?showtopic=4139 - Community guard. Post a list of users in a page so we can help moniter them and open forum for us to report sites that have violated the TOF.

Not so major

9. You got removed from http://www.free-webhosts.com/webhosting-01.php.

10.The freakin thing was Cpanel. Cpanel is not built for >100 users. i think you may want to consider LayeredPanel or DirectAdmin. CPanel is just dragging your server down. I go into server status. I open file manager. I delete a bunch of files. I swap back into the server status (in Firefox). I refresh the page. The cpu goes up by 1.

And i've tried out izfree while you were away. Their server was way fast and had few limitations. However it lacked some software support and restarted every time (and takes >10 seconds) when new user was added (and that's frequent). If heliohost resumed normal uptime, i'm sure it would have got more users.

Co.cc is working for me now! New problem related to it however: Some Images don't load and that really blows. I try using m heliohost url and images load just fine. what's the deal?

Check file permissions. I had images with a permission of 700, put them back to 644.

Also, it would be nice for an upgrade in space and bandwidth. other providers like byethost and sqweeds and sitegoz have better space and bandwidth. Even though heliohost ( in my opinion ) Offer the best in features like password protect directories, I.P. deny manager, and allowing users to upload the best forum software like IPB, Vbulliten, and SMF when most hosts don't allow such good services), the reason many go to these hosts with limits is simply because of the space and bandwidth in which they offer. This must change if heliohost want to bring many back here. I am enjoying my website but these need to be settled as I hear byethost allow the forum installation as well. I Don't mind the space and maybe the bandwidth I have now but those who never heard of heliohost will be looking more for space and bandwidth rather than features and support of forum software... that's my two bits.

We have a new problem: Whoeever manages heliohost, does that person even care anymore?

Evidently djbob still cares because we still have our free web space, but it seems he just isn't active in the forum anymore. If he would start posting more this group would be come back alive again and start generating him more money.

Cheers,

Byron

I second that. Although we should consider ourselves lucky that we have such a good host and, all for free. This has allowed me to develop without the overhead of paid hosting.

@co.cc problem: It was our bad. This problem is now fixed.

ASP. NET seems to be disabled. *.aspx pages don't load anymore (example). Is it possible to resolve that issue?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry... ASP.NET was taking a lot of resources. We currently have it disabled, but might reenable it in the near future.

1. Core files. Everytime the server crashes, core files are dumped into folders with php files.

that has caused my account to go way over the file limit.

Is this still occurring? I believe it should be fixed now.

2. HD. Disk /dev/sda3 (/usr) has used up 92 %.
This shouldn't be affecting you guys, but I am aware of the problem.

3. Sendmail. Mail sent out to accounts that my file manager is full is blank. Only by opening the header did i notice this was sent from Stevie.
Sendmail is functional for me. Are you sure this isn't your bad?

Fixed.

5. Instability. The server has less than 60% uptime. (This two weeks were <87%)
Should be better now.

Is this still occurring?

8. Phishing. Heliohost has become a phishing host.

I've considered this, but with all the accounts on Stevie this might take a really long while. I usually get emails from lawyers and the such when a phishing site is identified, and I try to take it down ASAP.

I'm going to wait a month to see if Stevie remains stable with the signups re-enabled and then resubmit.

I very much doubt that you are the sole cause of that jump in server load, but yes cPanel is a problem. Unfortunately at this point it is absolutely necessary for HelioHost - neither LayeredPanel nor DirectAdmin offer many of the features that we require.

@laozing: Do you really need more bandwidth and space, though?
