Snowboardalliance Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 I'm surprised no one started this (since it is the forum topic). Well I use open source programs whenever possible (Firefox, The GIMP, etc.) and my parents buy some things like Norton.
lappy512 Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 i would use AVG/Avast instead of norton, but yeah, mostly open source is cool, but sometimes closed source is good om some cases. djbob and i had this flame war on why people hate ms. http://forums.krazyletter.com/index.php?showtopic=1224
nilayz Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 It all depends on the kind of program I'm looking for and the type of work I need to do with that program. I usually go in for Freeware... sometimes open-source.. but I just get the binary version... who has time to run, compile, modify the source?!?!?! And sometimes I do depend on commercial programs... but I also do use Serials2000 a lot
Snowboardalliance Posted April 3, 2005 Author Posted April 3, 2005 but I just get the binary version... who has time to run, compile, modify the source?!?!?! Same here. But it's still open source.
HerLoss Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 I guess it depends on how well the free/open-source versions stack up against the shareware/closed-source versions. For antivirus and the like, Im content with Spybot S&D, AntiVir, and Ad-Aware, but when it comes to other things, like movie editing programs, recording studio programs, and the like, Id just as soon buy it, unless of course its the $199 Mixcraft Studios recording studio, I pirated that. lol.
lappy512 Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 sorry, my link wasn't evident. we had a flame war on why people hate ms. the link is: http://forums.krazyletter.com/index.php?showtopic=1224 i modified the first one too now.
GameClaw_268 Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 FOr important, well established programs, its better to pay, but for small stuff litering the internet, freeware if no-longer in devolpment/owner doesn't want people stealing, and Open source in cases of incomplete programs.
awesomegamer Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 but whats sad for business owners is that you can get just about anything free on the net with serials ect. and they think they got safe with online registration only so you cant just enter a code or a code and matching name but now they have patches that hack programs for you! but im sure there will be some super encrytion no one will crack for a long time. but everything can be decrypted, no such thing as "uncrackable"... how do you think the program reads the data??? other wise it would just be random, it has a pattern. sorry i think i got just a little off topic there but you see my point?
GameClaw_268 Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 129terrabit incryption, it'd take the worlds most powerful supercomputer to crack that... not that your program would run for the next few years though...
GameClaw_268 Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 yeah, I saw that. The TCPA is gonna allow you to choose programs though, so its not that bad... anymore. It might actually do something useful instead of destroying small buisiness
awesomegamer Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 yeah, alot of members at the GMC (gamemaker community) (lol, cant stop talking about it) have in their sig against TCPA because they want to but mark overmars' program from him and he wont have any business and gamemaker wont be free... or maybe even exist.
GameClaw_268 Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 If you read the news though, you allow programs on your own, a minor nuisance, but it wouln't destroy the gamemaker.
awesomegamer Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 oh, then whats going to happen to GM? i know that mark wont make any money so he wont make any more programs, but the old ones ofcourse would still be usable, especially if you registered one. i did.
PhoenixFlame512 Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 I voted for depends. I mean, it depends on what the software will be used for. If your occupation is a developer, you would obviously prefer open source software when possible because you can easily mod it to your personal needs. But closed source has its advantages. Companies can keep rivals from stealing company secrets by making their software closed source.
