Optimal Refresh Rate Setting For Ajax Shoutbox?

Hi guys,

I would like to find know what is the best refresh rate to set for an ajax shoutbox so that is does not overload the server?

 

I'm using MyShoutbox for MyBB forum board and the default refresh rate setting is 15 seconds.

Depends, throttle it based on the foot-traffic you get, at this point I'm sure your users won't be making posts that often so at least push it to a minute+
