Hi,

Does anyone have any good recommendations for creating a test enviroment for WordPress?

Ideally, I would like to have my main domain example.com access my live site, and have a test.example.com access my test site.

I would like the test site to be live. For example, if any of my users use test.example.com they can make post etc, and they will be displayed on the live site.

However, I would like any changes. In terms of themes, plugins, widgets, etc on the test site to not effect the live site.

After I've made changes to the test site that I'm happy with, I would like to be able to propergate thoses changes to the live site.

If this is at all possible then this could be layerd. For example, I could have a test site that I would on. Then a beta site that I can use to get other people to test, and the finally my live site.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure, but are you trying to create something like:

http://blog.shinryuukai.co.cc

That's what I gathered as best I could from your post, if I'm wrong could you explain. If I'm right all you have to do is create a subdomain on your main domain and install wordpress in the sub, if/when you're ready to apply it to the whole site copy the database and install wp in the root folder /home/user/.

Note: creating a subdomain is like creating a regular domain, you have to wait up to 24 hrs for the script to set it up and for it to become live.

To create a sub domain, you need go to cPanel and select "subdomains" in the category Domains.

Just fill in the fields and cPanel will do the rest.

After 24h, your site should be ready to use.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Setting up subdomains is no problem.

I guess what I'm trying to achieve can be explained in this way.

I have my website at my main domain nerd.bd.to.

I would like to have a have a test site test.nerd.bd.to that is live that I can use to make changes and then have people review it. After the review process and I'm happy with everything I would like to deloy the design to nerd.bd.to with zero downtime.

However, if I copy everything from nerd.bd.to to test.nerd.bd.to (including DB) and then take a few weeks making changes. Then I cannot simply transfer test.nerd.bd.to back to nerd.bd.to since there will be new content. IE there will be new post, comments, users, etc.

  • 4 weeks later...

Great find! I was thinking you wanted to have the test environment on the server and not on your computer. But my suggestions would have been what you have already tried. This will probably help others on the Community.

Would you mind indicating what the "Great Find" was?

Can you explain this a little better I am bit confused. what do you mean by making changes on test.nerd.bd.to will also make changes to nerd.bd.to

it shouldn't make any changes at all unless you upload test.nerd.bd.to the to the server to update nerd.bd.to; the only way it would make changes is if you don't make copy of the database so the current one doesn't get updated with nerd.bd.to. Please Explain your situation a little better because this is what I got from your message.
