craigis Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Firstly I know that HelioHost is funded completely though donations and the ads that are displayed throughout the site. Anyway what I wanted to know / suggest is why don't you add an error message that is displayed if someone is using ad blocking software in their browser. I'm not sure as to how it is done but I have seen it done before where the site has forced me to disable the software to be able to see the content. The reason I ask this is if the ads are not displayed you don't get any revenue from them so why not just have a error that is displayed which forces people to turn the blocking software off so more ads are displayed? I run AdBlock Plus in chrome and keep forgetting to change the settings to allow ads on your sites so that you are supported even if its though a few ads being displayed. Well that is just a thought anyway you guys might have a reason not to do this but if you hadn't considered it you may be able to use this as an idea. Quote
Guest xaav Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Do you know of any script that does this? Quote
cl58 Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 It would not be moral to block access to the site completely if using an ad blocker (personally, if it was like that when I first signed up, I would have left and found another host), but there would be no harm in a simple message saying something like:"HelioHost is funded entirely through advertisements on this site and donations. Please disable your ad blocker to help support HelioHost" 1 Quote
craigis Posted November 28, 2011 Author Posted November 28, 2011 Do you know of any script that does this? I don't know of a script that does this but then I haven't had time to look either. I can't even remember the site that I first saw it on so I'll have to poke around in my history to see if I can find it and go from there. A way that I thought it could be possible to do is have a variable in the php scripting that is changed when the ad is displayed which will then let the rest of the site load or hide a message banner etc. But then I haven't done a lot of scripting with php and it depends on how the ads are displayed as well I guess so that may not be possible... It's just a thought anyway. Would that be moral to do? It would not be moral to block access to the site completely if using an ad blocker (personally, if it was like that when I first signed up, I would have left and found another host), but there would be no harm in a simple message saying something like:"HelioHost is funded entirely through advertisements on this site and donations. Please disable your ad blocker to help support HelioHost" @Wizard That's true it may not be completely moral to do so but I agree with what cl58 said as a warning banner possible something simple like the old forums warning that you were not logged in requesting for the blocking software be disabled for the site. Wizard Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 To answer the original question, in terms of funds, we're doing fine. Since we aren't doing this for profit, there's no reason to implement changes that would possibly up ad revenue. Quote
cl58 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Just for reference, I found this:http://adblockdetector.com/ Quote

Always good to hear that Just for reference, I found this:http://adblockdetector.com/ I've had a little look around as well but I didn't find that site as of yet though my searching.I have had a little poke around and can't find the site I saw it on...For some reason I can't find it in my web history (although there is a lot to go though)... Well since it isn't need I won't look too much into it but it was something I thought was interesting at the time I found it and it could be useful in the future anyway. Quote
npl Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I had ad block on once and this site did what you guys are talking about http://4walled.org/ Quote
rgrace Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 A script like the one you mentioned would be a huge turn off for visitors. Most people are not going to turn off their blockers, they will simply hit the back button and find another site to go to. Quote
dbagley Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 See: http://thepcspy.com/read/how_to_block_adblock/ jshttp://adblockdetector.com/ js http://jellyscape.co.uk/ultimateAdBlockBlocker.php php http://forums.mapletip.com/index.php?/topic/115356-how-to-block-adblock-plus/ js Probably the best solution would be to implement it in php (maybe even a cgi script), because JS is easily disabled.
