But the clock speed of the AMD Athlon 2800+ is a lot slower than the clock speed you could get with an Intel CPU of the same price.

The cheapest pentium 4 I can find is a 2.26GHz for 125.99. They dont MAKE pentium 4's with less speed than that, and I dont need a processor with that much. My 2800 with 2.08 is just 104 (checked). Big speed difference there, and the 2.28 was the same price as the pent. 4 at 125.49

Then I suggest the 2.28GHz Pentium 4. It is a bit pricier, but it will be worth it.

i nderstand now, its because the total price of a computer includes different things than just the CPU. so whats a fair deal on a CPU? if i got a good amount of money and all different types cost the same, which is likely to be the best?

Currently, $200 should get you a 3.2-4GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology. But you might want to wait it out for a few months and take a look at the new Pentium D that's coming out. So far, Acer, Dell, and Alienware have signed up with Intel to use the Pentium Ds.

Dell and HP are both crap for the sold reason that they are hard to work with. I was trying to upgrade one and the hard drive was in the back of the case on the side. That diddnt make any sense... And it was too cramped to begin with. They dont wire for crap either. Its just one tangled mess.
