co1dfus1on Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Could anyone tell my why ubuntu 7.10 will not run on my dell vostro 200 will a 2.6 dual core processor? Possibly because it's a dell.
co1dfus1on Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 no srsly though, can we have some feedback (error messages etc.) If you are getting a kernel panic (absolutely nothing happening -- screen frozen etc, sometimes lights on keyboard flashing) it is probably a problem wiht hardware: try unplugging all usb devices and booting, and then pugging them back in one by one until you hit the one that was causing the error. Have you checked your cd for defects? It might be that it is damaged/corrupted in some way, in which case you'd need to re-download/re-burn or order a free copy from ubuntu via ShipIt. Make sure your motherboard, chipset, graphics/sound card, drives etc are supported (just google their name with "linux" and have a look what comes up).
Wizard Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Shame on you co1dfus1on for double posting. But co1dfus1on is right, you should provide details if you want anyone to even consider helping you. Posting something like "help plz, how do I make it go" is n00by behavior. Also, there are usually guides on the 'net to tell you what you need to know about getting Linux to work on your computer. This is probably your best resource.
teh silly Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 What these guys are sayin' is true ... how very silly of you. However, they are also ripping on Dell, one of the *better* brands for a laptop (albeit, mostly due to the amazing warranties, if you know how to deal with them). This is also silly. Dell is actually a fairly good laptop brand (their desktops are shoddy, though). And Ubuntu? Since you're trying to run Gutsy, it should just ... work. Here's some n00by questions in response to teh n00bie question: If you downloaded the iso, did you burn it to a disc correctly? Depending on the iso you have, you might have to actually boot to the operating system and install from the icon on the desktop. Do you have a Live disc? Did you put the disk in and boot from CD/DVD? Was the computer unplugged? Are you teh silly (I know I am! )? Are you sick of being n00bed at (I know I would be)? Too bad, my class is far to boring for me to be doing anything else right now. Please note that the above about Dell is merely my opinion, having spent a fair amount of years past fixing people's broken stuff. You have to ***** at Dell, but you get your stuff, stat.
rct Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 Two things, first it has no error message. So what was I going to tell you! Secondly, I have now fixed it, my keyboard was causing the error.
teh silly Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Hahaha, maybe tell us that there is no error message. And maybe let us know what happened when you turned it on, etc, because we still don't know! (And yes, I understand you fixed it, but it was a terrible question and now next time you will know what to write )
teh silly Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Haha, that is an excellent resource. People, take note.
rct Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Ubuntu just started loading and then nothing happens, it just stops. No message or anything!
Wizard Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Is this booting from your hard drive or a LiveCD? At what stage did it freeze? i.e what did you see when it stopped? Until you answer at least those two questions, we can do nothing to help you.
