does anyone else do any programming and what languages would you recommend i take up for when i go to university?

It depends on what you want to do.

If you are looking to get a job from your programming education, are you planning on working for a software or internet company?

If you are making software most companies would expect you to use C++ or java but there are others.

If you are planning on programming internet software, I would advise starting with php and SQL.

My high school teaches C++ but it's very basic and text only, I hope college is more advanced.

Depends on what you would like to do. There are a range of languages suited for different areas of work.
