Ashoat Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Our proxy services have now been optimized to work efficiently at your school or work. Thats right, they can now bypass distict and work firewalls (tested on two different firewalls). At least for now, while we're not too popular . To clarify what a proxy is, it allows you to access websites through another server. Basically, instead of directly contacting a website, you contact the proxy, which in turn contacts the website, and sends you the website through it. This service is quite handy, especially if your school or work has blocked a website you want to visit, but hasn't blocked the proxy (yet). What will we do if we are blocked? Currently, we are researching a system that will generate and reserve random websites (www.9q82nd18.com). Since this will only be implemented when we become really popular (hopefully we will...), by then we will place ads on the proxy (a small nonobtrusive banner at top), and users will click on them and generate money for the domain registration. Until then, if we are blocked, we will change our address to prx.helioNET.org, and if that gets blocked, we will have to depend on our customers with domains. But for now, we're free and unblocked Thanks!
awesomegamer Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 cool, maybe a site somehow "masking" itself would work too? is that what this does? i dont really understand it.
Ashoat Posted April 24, 2005 Author Posted April 24, 2005 Lemme explain: Regular Process: Computer > Site (Computer asks for info from Site) Site > Computer (Site gives info to computer) Firewalled Process Computer > Site (Computer asks for info from Site) Site > FIREWALL > Computer (Site has to pass the firewall to get to the computer) If the firewall blocks the site's info, the computer doesn't recieve anything. Proxy Version: Computer > Proxy > Site (Computer asks Proxy to get info about Site) Site > Proxy > Firewall > Computer (Site gives info to Proxy as if Proxy was a Computer, Proxy passes Firewall because Firewall doesn't know about it, gets info to Computer)
awesomegamer Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 then how do firewals protect against viruses, if firewals can be beat by a proxy? sorry im very confused, ill get back on topic.
Ashoat Posted April 24, 2005 Author Posted April 24, 2005 Firewalls don't protect against viruses... well, they do, but very weakly. They mostly protect your privacy. Antivirus software protects you against viruses.
HerLoss Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Firewalls help defend against hackers and torjans and keyloggers and stuff. It controls what programs are allowed to send and recieve informaiton throught your ports. A hacker then has to find a new port to use if the normal one is blocked, or find a way to disguise a program as one that the firewall recognises. It also disallows trojans and keyloggers from sending information out to their owners.
Ashoat Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Yesh, thats the good part of forced firewalls. The bad part is that they block out all the good sites (including game sites!) I mean, I have a firewall, but it doesnt block out anything (unlike district/work-forced ones)
