Hacktivism has the allure of using hacking for a noble cause but there is nothing noble about the type of

hacking that is commonly referenced by the media. Hacktivism is the so called blend of hacking and

activism. The purported motivation and purpose of hacktivism is to support a political cause but in direct

opposition of true activism, hacktivism often negatively impacts or disrupts the political process as a

whole. The methods used by hacktivists are actually attacks to the electronic systems of anyone with an

opposing view. As mentioned, anyone is fair game but generally there are specific targets. Usually the

hackers go after websites with high visibility and large viewerships so to cause the most disruption.

These attacks are illegal and give an unfair advantage and sometimes unwanted advantage to one

political party or cause over another.

Quite often hacktivist are outsiders and not a part of the formal group in which they are supporting.

Therefore their support may not even be welcome. None of the formal groups involved may have

privately asked for or advocated an attack and as a result they will not return the favor of supporting the

hacktivists especially if they are caught in the act.

Introduce a naïve, honest or otherwise innocent person into the scenario and you often have a scapegoat

for the real perpetrators. This is a person who is drawn in by the activism side of the scheme. They want

to support what they feel is a good cause. Hacktivist are skilled at presenting what they would call a

solution to a legitimate problem that often plagues the masses. This solution may obscure or make light

of the illegal techniques involved by touting them as necessary evils in the fight for the common good. - John L. Carlisle a.k.a Xwinuser

As a side note, you were complaining about all the "hacking" topics in your news post earlier, and now you are starting more of them.

One of my favorite quotes:

If the end does not justify the means - what can?

I wasn't ranting about it. I was just noting that there are a lot of hacking posts.

My post was trying to be more like the topic describes, a philosophical view. I'm not telling anyone how to hack.

Also, at first I didn't get that HelioNet was not about HeliHost exclusively. I was new here and got here through the HelioHost site.

I get it now. A pure forum. Not directly related to the hosting site. Works for me. Sounds good. I just want to fit in! heh

I get your analogy Brother Hassan. I agree it is war in some instances. In my post I also spoke of those who get involved for one purpose only to be used to serve another purpose.

Hey,

I believe some hacking can be for a noble cause, classified information for example all the governments hiding from us, they should not have the power to hide information for the so called protection of us. Wikileaks for example I believe that is a noble cause would that be classed as hacktivism ?

No one likes to be told what to do and I especially do not like the government thinking they know better than me what I need to know but we do not want our enemies to know what we know. I do not like that someone who was not an American took it upon himself to release information that could put American troops in danger. I would not like that situation for any country.Jullian did not have any skin in the game so to speak. It was not his problem. I believe his intentions were for fame. Maybe not money but definitely not for a noble cause.

I think that hacktivism is good and bad. I totally support it to a point where it starts to harm lots of people.

I also think that some governments are trying to hide things from the people, and that is where hacktivism exposes that information to the world, letting everyone know what's actually going on,

Hacktivism is popular in many manners brothers, as like when we see a good game or software, first we try to get it free, here in my city most of my friends use pirated or cracked software or game. Hacking is not legal but you can't stop it !!

<div>Hacktivism is not very useful to say, what is accomplished by hacktivism?, Nothing.</div>

<div>The world, the era in which we live  follows a "path" and way of life that hardly hacktivism or any kind of antisocial behavior could change.</div>

I find Hacktivism to be a type of Cyber war. People used to fight with swords and now they do it using computers :ph34r:/>

I don't agree. It's more a pacific protest: you don't kill, your damages can be easily reverted from the admin. It's more like going in front of White House (example) and protest
