Having free hosting is great, but you also need a domain in order to get your website online. You could of course use a free subdomain from your web-host, but that generally limits your options and means you cannot transfer your website elsewhere without having to change your URL as well. That's the problem a free domain solves. This list is composed of providers who offer free domains at no charge and give you full DNS control as well as the ability to use your own name-servers (or the name-servers of HelioHost).

	Free domain providers:

.eu.org - Free subdomain with rather complicated registration procedure. But this provider has been around since 1996 and most likely will be around for a long time. Free subdomains are either backlogged greatly or have stopped entirely. Already registered subdomains still work.

FreeDomain.one or DNSExit.com - Free Subdomains. Cannot change NS servers but can use most other things like A records. Free .work.gd, .run.place, and .link.pc subdomains. Unfortunately, some domains like .jo3.org seem to be broken.

DigitalPlat Domains - WEBSITE/DASHBORD UPDATED DigitalPlat Domain is a nonprofit stewarding free, resilient namespaces so people and organizations everywhere can claim a trusted home on the internet, and we operate and manage public namespaces such as free *.qzz.io, *.dpdns.org domains and one time payment for *.us.kg, *.xx.kg domains, offering free registration and administration to individuals and communities worldwide.

Github Search - This is an accumulation of repositories that allow free subdomains or have links to places that have free subdomains. Look around and you might find something you need.

Domains.is.a.shop - A curated collection of free subdomains ideal for personal websites, open source projects, portfolio showcases, and innovative online ventures. Find your desired domain here in our little shop, completely free of charge.

FreeDNS - A service where people can submit their domains so other people can get subdomains from it. This community oriented nature means there are over 100,000 domains in there pool and many of them can be used to get free subdomains.

This list has been made possible using the list from http://getfreedomain.name/, and updates from other admins.

	Hi everyone,

I just recently set up a site on HelioHost (Tommy server) and wanted to share how I enabled HTTPS and basic protection using Cloudflare. This is useful especially since HelioHost doesn’t offer automatic SSL for custom domains out of the box.

	---

	Steps:

	1. Add your domain to Cloudflare

	Go to https://dash.cloudflare.com

Click Add a Site, choose the Free plan

Cloudflare will scan your DNS records

At the end, you will get two nameservers to replace your current ones

Go to your domain registrar and update your nameservers accordingly

(Wait some time for the DNS to propagate, up to 24h)

	---

	2. Point your domain to your HelioHost server (Tommy)

After the domain is active in Cloudflare:

Go to the DNS tab in Cloudflare

	Add a record like:

	Type: A

	Name: forum (or your subdomain)

	IPv4 address: <your_hosting_ip>

	Proxy status: Proxied (orange cloud)

(If you use the root domain, set Name: @)

	---

	3. Enable SSL and force HTTPS

	In Cloudflare:

	Go to SSL/TLS > Overview

Choose "Full" or "Full (strict)" if you have a Let’s Encrypt cert on the server

Otherwise, use “Flexible” (not ideal but works)

Go to SSL/TLS > Edge Certificates

	Enable Always Use HTTPS

	Enable Automatic HTTPS Rewrites

	---

	Notes:

Make sure your web host supports SSL if you use "Full (strict)"

You can still access your files and settings via HelioHost control panel (e.g. Plesk)

	---

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m still new to this but happy to help where I can!

I was looking at some posts related to Gmail so I investigated them. I found the cause.

 v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:65.19.143.6 ~all

This is the Tommy server SPF record. There is no +a setting. The host name is added after +a. example: +a:example.hellohost.org
From this, Gmail refused delivery due to indefinite SPF settings. However, some mail servers still deliver.
I removed +a from this record. After that, emails sent from Gmail came to HelioHost.

If you see this, please check this first with an email address that does not affect the sending and receiving of emails, and add a comment.
With this confirmation, the administrator will be able to modify the name server.

This topic targets cheap, paid domains. Free domains have a separate topic:

Have you already donated to HelioHost? If so, you will be able to pay for the domain names.
There was a lot of talk on Discord about domain names, so I found it convenient to post this.

HelioHost is currently offering SUBDOMAIN.heliohost.us to new users.
Since .us is a ccTLD, it may adversely affect search results in areas other than the US.
It will be one factor for you to add a custom domain.

If you find it difficult to maintain on HelioHost,
you can keep your web and mail in the same domain even if you move the server.
Of course, it is also effective to move from another server to HelioHost.

	TLD LIST

	https://tld-list.com/

TLD LIST is ideal for you to find the domains.
The registrar rating here really looks like the user is posting.

What top-level domains do you know other than .com and .net?
Currently, there are over 1500 types of TLDs!

	.pp.ua

	https://www.nic.ua/

.pp.ua can be registered and updated for free from nic.ua. Therefore, it is treated as a free domain.

	.feedback

.feedback provides a dedicated feedback system. Not suitable for use with common servers, including HelioHost.

	Global Registry Services

	http://grs.domains/

.accountant .bid .cricket .date .download .faith .loan .men .party .racing .review .science .stream .trade .webcam .win

This is a domain with volatile prices.
At one point it was under $1, but sometimes it was over $10.
The TLD LIST price fluctuation graph shows it clearly.
You may be charged a high renewal fee later after registering these at a low price.
To keep it in good condition, you should register for multiple years.

	.ovh

	https://www.nic.ovh/
https://ovh.ie/

The .ovh domain is cheap, but the OVH control panel is confusing and occasionally stores queues for a few days. And the support system doesn't really work.
Can't you register a domain at a nearby OVH? You should be able to register from OVH.ie. However, a 23% tax will be added.
You can see an interesting episode on nic.ovh where this .ovh domain was born.

Shortdot

	https://shortdot.bond/

	.bond .cfd .cyou .icu .sbs

I wonder why they applied for such a TLD,
(.sbs is originally managed by another registry)
In particular, .cyou and .icu have been maintained at relatively low prices from the beginning.
Due to the above elimination method, .cyou is one of the recommended TLDs at this stage.

	Additional Information

	https://www.heliohost.org/partners/namecheap

HelioHost is partnered with Namecheap. For you to find a domain.

You will be able to register your domain for free someday after posting to HelioNet. ($10 or less)

Top-level domains are still being added. Please add the latest information and questions you know and their answers to the comments.
They will surely help those who are looking here to use custom domain in HelioHost.

These aren't the same as Heliohost, in fact their common feature is perhaps the main thing that Heliohost doesn't offer, which is shell (command line) access. They also don't generally try so hard to replicate the level of support and user friendliness of a commercial web host, like Heliohost do. All the same, many offer web hosting, and some are run by official not-for-profit organisations.

SDF may be the oldest, dating back to 1987 and a 501( c )(7) non-profit organisation since 2001. Another is Grex, a non-profit dating back to 1991. Both offer web hosting, though with less storage space than Heliohost and no cPanel (administration is generally expected to be done from the shell (command line) after logging in via SSH.

In recent years a lot of new services have appeared, many as part of the "Tildeverse". Tilde.club seems to be the largest, but there are a lot out there, some with only a handful of users. Here's a list. Not all offer web hosting, but many do. The exact features vary a lot, with the smaller "Tildes" generally less restrictive on the resources available to individual users. They generally aim to inspire a community spirit, sometimes following a particular philosophy. Very much on a hobby sort of level, commercial use is often discouraged/disallowed.

Gopher, an internet protocol predating the web, is also often provided for a growing number of hobbyists. A list of Pubnixes is also on there:
gopher://rawtext.club/1/~cmccabe/pubnixhist/
Or available via a Web-Gopher proxy.

Most run flavours of Linux or BSD. Wilde is the sole Windows one, and if you're game there's even one running the obsolete DEC operating system TOPS-20.

I just read SDF's long history page, and it was quite interesting to me (maybe not to the average joe).

Anyway, not equivalents to Heliohost, but possibly of use/interest to some people here.
